There’s a regression to the mean in terms of young men with zero partners.

And most of the sexual recession is affecting low-income groups more than high-income groups.

In the past three decades we have seen a massive drop in adults engaging in any form of weekly naked interaction. In 1990, about 9% of men aged 18–29 had zero intimacy. By 2024, the number tripled. A quarter of men under 30 have never experienced sex.

This gap is gendered. While sexual inactivity has risen for young women too (up to 20%), it has skyrocketed for young men (over 32%).

Everyone thinks they know why this is happening. But the reality is a complex mix of economics, biology, and algorithms affecting us all, from the US to Japan to Colombia. The only outliers seem to be Greece (cultural health) and Brazil.

So, why did we stop touching each other?

The first variable is economic. You can’t bring a date home if you don’t have a home.

In 2010, one-third of young adults lived with their parents. Today, it’s more than half. As the rate of young people living at home skyrockets, the rate of marriage and cohabitation collapses in an almost perfect inverse correlation.

We are delaying one of the most important graduations of adulthood: independence.

The Anhedonia Epidemic

Beyond the economy, there is a mental health crisis. Anxiety, depression and plain loneliness have been growing non-stop, accelerated by mobile social networks, short-form video formats and the pandemic.

In my research for this piece, I found a more specific, terrifying concept: Anhedonia.

Anhedonia is the inability to feel pleasure. It is a core symptom of severe depression. In 1990, around 180 million people globally suffered from it. Today, that number is nearing 350 million.

Getting naked with another human being is one of the biggest social risks you can take, which becomes unimaginable for an anxious, risk-averse, reclusive society.

The Algorithm’s Inequality

Dating apps have created an inequality curve that rivals the global economy. Their ranking algorithms, optimized for user retention, make the top 20% of men capture 80% of the attention and likes. The bottom 50% of men are fighting for 4.3% of the attention.

Women in apps end up overexposed to a group of men in that top 20% who live in a world of abundance, warping their empathy. While men in the other 80% feel invisible.

If you’re not in those apps, you’re scrolling through Instagram, applying the “Paris” filter to our lives, erasing the stretch marks and flaws of reality. We’re trading the eroticism of physical presence for a curated digital hallucination.

The Death of the Bedtime Routine

Even married couples aren’t safe. The frequency of intimacy in marriage has dropped from 70% weekly in 2000 to 58% today.

People are having fewer kids, so it isn’t parenthood: It’s the phone.

The natural window for intimacy used to be right before sleep. You’d brush your teeth, get into bed, read a book, and eventually touch your partner. Now, we spend three hours scrolling before sleep and grab the phone the second we wake up.

We’re physically in the same bed, while our minds live in a digital feed of emotional validation coming from likes and DMs from strangers, whose smell we’ll never know.

The “Only” Economy

Here is the most damning chart I found. I initially thought I was wrong because the global condom market is growing. But that growth is coming from expanding markets in Africa and Asia.

When you look at the “consolidated markets” in developed economies, condom sales are collapsing:

In red, you see the revenue growth of digital intimacy platforms (like OnlyFans). In green, the sales volume of condoms. We are swapping physical, social relationships for digital, parasocial ones.

The Biological Factor

Our biology is also under attack. Sperm counts have dropped by roughly 52% in the last 50 years.

There are microplastics in 100% of tested testicular tissue (mostly from tire friction and synthetic clothing). We are also seeing the side effects of the GLP-1 revolution. Drugs like Ozempic are miraculous for obesity, but early data suggests a slight correlation with erectile dysfunction and lowered testosterone in a small percentage of users.

And, of course, we’re drinking less alcohol.

It Gets Better for Women (and Millennials)

If you are a Millennial reading this and feeling sad: just wait.

The data shows a fascinating twist. While Gen Z is having the least sex in history, Millennials are starting to figure it out. Post-pandemic, the intimacy numbers for Millennials are creeping up.

Why? Millennials are now in their early 40s, and after 40, everything gets better.

The drama fades. You stop playing games. You state what you want.

The other big reason for the volume decline in sexual activity is actually a positive one: Gender Equity.

In the past, the high frequency of sex in “Boomer” marriages came from women having no choice. They couldn’t say no. Financial and social dependence forced compliance.

Today, women have control. They have money, freedom, and futuristic toys that are freakishly good. Women need men less than men need women.

That’s the final reason. As the volume of sex encounters falls, female satisfaction is rising. It’s a trade of quantity for quality, specially for women.

The demand for real connection hasn’t dropped though. We all, in every gender and orientation, want to meet that person who feels special. We just have to be brave enough to put down the phone, ask for what we want, enjoy rejection and, from time to time, find the spark.

It refers to how easy it is in America to fall into irreversible poverty. One medical debt away from bankruptcy. 700,000 people homeless in the richest country on Earth. The Chinese state amplifies this narrative for obvious reasons: their citizens shouldn’t be thinking about democracy.

They’re not entirely wrong about the facts. but they’re wrong about the conclusion.

Democracy Numbers Look Bad

There’s a changing of the economic guard. In 1995, the G7 democracies controlled 45% of global economic power. BRICS nations held 17%. By 2030, those lines will have crossed dramatically: BRICS at 40%, G7 at 27%.

The human geography has shifted too. In 2010, 48% of humanity lived under autocracies. By 2024: 72%. Meanwhile, people living in fully liberal democracies dropped from 14% to 12%.

And trust? People in China report 79% confidence in their government. Singapore: 77%. The UAE: 74%. Compare that to Canada at 52%, Germany at 45%, the US at 46%.

The Youth Problem

Support for democracy declines sharply by age, specially in Latin America. Among Latin Americans over 60, 56% support democracy and only 13% prefer authoritarianism. Among those under 25? Only 45% support democracy, and 21% would prefer a dictator telling them what to do.

Among 18-35 year olds globally, 35% would accept a leader without elections. 42% would accept military rule.

Older people remember what authoritarian rule actually means. Young people have lived through democratic prosperity without understanding what built it.

Why This Is Happening

It’s not irrational. Authoritarian systems are faster. Building a metro line takes 12 years in New York, 11 in London, 6 in Madrid and only 4 in Singapore.

When young people see dictatorships building gleaming infrastructure while democracies argue endlessly, the appeal is obvious.

In China, 85% believe their children will be better off. In Japan, it’s 22%. In the US, one-third. This correlates closely with projected GDP growth.

Long Term Democracy Wins

Democracies generate 20% more GDP growth than authoritarian countries over time. Autocracies may sprint but eventually stagnate.

And the issue of trusting authoritarian economic data is that dictatorships lie. A 2022 study using satellite imagery to measure light emissions, something you can’t fake, found that free countries don’t inflate their GDP reports. Partially free countries inflate by 15%. Dictatorships? They inflate by 35%.

You Want Singapore, You Get Venezuela

When people fantasize about benevolent authoritarianism, they imagine Singapore. “Run the country like a company! Lock up the criminals! That worked for so-and-so!”

But Singapore is the exception that proves the rule. It’s a city-state of 5.6 million people with competitive internal elections and a freedom score of 48/100—pretty high for a dictatorship.

What you actually get is Venezuela. The GDP collapse there is historically unprecedented. From 100% in 2013 to 30% in 2023. No modern country has experienced anything comparable.

The pattern is clear: democratic collapse leads to economic collapse, slowly at first, then all at once.

Latin America Is in Trouble

The Democracy Index for Latin America dropped from 6.37 to 5.61 in a decade. Only two countries are improving: Costa Rica and Uruguay.

It rhymes with the pre-WWII pattern. Pandemic, economic crisis, nihilistic youth, and rising authoritarian votes. In 1928, the Nazis got 2.6%. They didn’t give up. By 1933: 43.9%.

The Real Cost of Authoritarianism

Here’s what you’re actually trading away:

• 11 years of life expectancy

• 6 years of education

• Press freedom (obviously)

• Higher GDP per capita

• And the big one: 45% forced emigration rate in autocracies vs. 2% in democracies

People vote with their feet.

China vs The World

Who invents things? Why didn’t China, home to the Wuhan respiratory disease lab, develop an mRNA vaccine?

Innovation happens in democracies. With exceptions for Singapore and China, the global innovation leaders are all democratic. Nobel laureates overwhelmingly live and work in democracies.

The “kill line” propaganda exists because China needs distraction. Birth rates have collapsed to century-lows. Youth unemployment is surging. Consumer confidence crashed from 120 to 86 and hasn’t recovered.

The average Chinese person feels like a hamster that can’t stop running. Exactly like what people outside China say about savage capitalism. Maybe it’s the same feeling. The difference is: in democracies, people objectively live better.

And China is running a slow-motion financial crisis. Debt per capita is rising faster than income. Sounds familiar to the global financial crisis of 2008.

Is Democracy Even Real?

Two tests prove your democracy is real:

One: They try to manipulate your vote. If democracy didn’t work, they wouldn’t spend millions on ads or trade tamales for votes.

Two: Peaceful transfer of power between rivals. When your country’s leader hands power to their opponent, you have a democracy. Whether you like it or not.

Democracies don’t go to war with each other. If you’re truly pro-peace, you’re pro-democracy.

The situation is complex. It’s not black and white. BRICS countries don’t collaborate, they kinda hate each other. The G7 is fractured. It’s understandable that democracy feels broken.

But I can tell you one thing with certainty:

Only in a democratic government can you complain about the government. In the rest, all you can say is that you can’t complain.

What we call openness and vulnerability is a function of shared time and shared secrets. Every conversation helps you understand a little more of who they are. Little intimacies exchange minds. They tell you how they see you, and you feel seen.

It’s not just romantic love. It happens with family and friends. Your siblings are childhood strangers until you give each other the opportunity to meet the person you actually are. Your friends are just people you happened to see periodically, until you know each other’s worries and joys in a way no one else does.

For others to love you, they need to see who you really are.

Of course, this is the internet, home to the normal distribution curve of humanity. A beautiful 15% of our best humans coexist with the foaming, psychopathic worst 15%, who will destroy you if you disclose your vulnerabilities to them. All of it padded by the safe, mid, 70% of the bell curve.

Do not do this on the internet.

I love to love. It’s a powerful side effect of the relentless intellectual curiosity that guides my life. I want to know everything about everything. This quirk has served me incredibly well and is at least 33% responsible for all the good things that have happened to me.

However, to love someone is to subscribe to their pain. So I can’t love everyone.

My network of friends is an unwoven mess of pulled threads, cruelly distributed around the globe. The people I admire the most, and who know me best, live in different cities, across different continents, separated by ten-hour flights and unfair time zones.

I built these relationships across my 30s by flying a lot. High-intensity trips of deep understanding and connection, living two-day journeys as fully as we could. I never ask “how are you?” and I can’t do small talk. Every question I asked had meaning, and every answer I gave was consciously crafted.

To feel seen is an addictive feeling, and it has to be earned.

I’m 39, so I’m still young, but old enough to see this cycle degrade. Some people fall into black holes of self-harm or mediocrity which, once you see them, will hurt you. Some, separated by distance, become different people who still carry in their memories the truths you shared. When things go wrong, some of them will use those truths to hurt you. Or you may hurt them.

Most, however, will just fade.

As you grow older, you naturally prioritize the relationships connected to your home, weakening the rest. It doesn’t matter if you’re monogamous, religious, poly, nomadic, slutty, or whatever. At the end of the day, you sleep in the same house, with the same people, for most of the year.

You have 24 hours in a day and 12 months in a year. You will filter people out of your life out of joy, conviction, duty, or routine.

Robin Dunbar is a science guy who measured, quite precisely, how many people you can actually know, and how much time you should dedicate to them:

• Core five: 5 people you love a LOT; 40% of your time

• Close fifteen: 15 people you feel close to; 20% of your time

• Fifty people you like and respect

• One hundred fifty people whose names you know and remember

Every new person you come to love takes time from the five core people you love the most. And they notice when they’re demoted from the core five to the close fifteen.

I’d like to tell you I’ve figured this out, but I struggle with it a lot. A reciprocal emotion of naïve curiosity triggers me in a way that’s hard to control. My time is in my hands, so I try to be disciplined about caring for the core five I don’t want to lose. Still, if I’m honest, there are many people I think I’ve loved, at least a little bit.

People I’ve lost.

We grew apart. They moved somewhere else. Our interests changed. We hurt each other. We got busy. They had kids. They fell in love. Whatever the case, they’re gone. And I think about them as I write this. Because once you’ve loved, even a little bit, the scar they leave changes the shape of your heart. So it’s impossible to forget them.

The level of pain is more or less proportional to the depth of that love.

As I grow older, I’m becoming more careful about who I choose to spend time with and share secrets with. I’m also more aware of the pain I can cause in them, over time, when I drift far from their lives.

Is this wisdom or cowardice? After all, as we age, we become lonelier.

Who knows. I’m still young, and I have much to learn.

All my life, I’ve had to explain that I don’t drink. In some social spaces, that idea was unbearable. “Come on, just one”, “one drink hasn’t harmed anyone”, etc. I became an expert at hiding it, asking discreetly for mocktails or sloooowly sipping a glass of sparkling water with a mint leaf.

In the past few years, my need to hide has disappeared, as not drinking has become the default. With it, however, the parties and social events have also faded away, replaced by vapers, screens and boredom.

Alcohol consumption is declining globally. Less than half of last year’s high school graduates had ever tried alcohol at any point during their entire high school experience. That number used to be 83% about fifteen years ago.

And this is bringing some curious side effects.

There’s been a collapse in time spent with friends. In 2003, people spent about 60 minutes a day with friends. Today? 26 minutes.

There’s also a decline in weekly sexual frequency among couples.

Alcohol is poison. The WHO published a series of meta-studies that found, without exception, that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption. “A little wine doesn’t hurt”? It hurts. The occasional beer? Still hurts. All alcohol consumption causes practically irreversible damage to your health.

A third of people aged 18-24 don’t consume alcohol at all, compared to 22% of millennials, 15% of Gen X, and 12% of boomers. Boomers drink at brutal rates.

When you break down teen alcohol consumption by grade level: in the 90s, 70% of eighth graders had tried alcohol. By 2024? Just 18%. For tenth graders, it went from 79% to 32%. For seniors, from 88% to 49%.

And before you say “but here in Latin America we drink a ton”, not really. Latin America is actually well below the top consuming countries. The heaviest drinkers are Romania, Georgia (more than double Latin America’s average), Czech Republic, Latvia, Ireland, Russia. The US drinks more than Latin America.

Even in Europe, historic wine producers and cultural drinkers, alcohol is in free fall. From 2010 to 2022, consumption in France, Finland, and Belgium has dropped significantly.

Weed Replaced It

I really didn’t want my research to give me this result. But it did.

There’s now a crossover point between daily alcohol users and daily cannabis users. Since roughly 2008, driven by legalization, cannabis consumption started rising, and for the first time in history, there are more daily cannabis users than daily alcohol users in the United States.

This also tracks generationally. The heaviest cannabis consumers are Gen Z (18-24), followed by 25-34, then 35-44, and so on. The generational decline in cannabis use mirrors, inversely, the generational decline in alcohol.

Over the past several years, legalization campaigns promoted many studies suggesting cannabis is practically medicine. That’s not true.

Multiple studies have shown serious issues. A 2023 study on cannabis and cardiovascular outcomes found it increases heart attack risk by 6x, doubles cardiovascular death risk, and even edibles reduce blood vessel function by 50%, similar to tobacco. Cannabis weakens the heart, inflames the lungs and organs, and causes chronic inflammation.

There’s also a significant link to psychosis. This is so common it’s embedded in culture: we all know people who’ve had panic attacks just from consuming it.

And there’s a 2022 study on long-term cognitive effects showing that when people consume cannabis frequently before age 20, particularly between 13-18, it causes a 5.5-point IQ decline that manifests in adulthood and doesn’t recover even after you stop using.

Cannabis makes young people permanently dumber. That’s why they’re called “stoners.” The stereotype exists for a reason.

Rituals We Lost

We seem to be trading alcohol for sadness, depression, and endless scrolling. Sure, it’s a damaging substance, but alcohol had another function.

Alcohol was the excuse for the ritual of connecting.

Look at where people consume. When you compare Gen Z (under 24) with Boomers, Gen Z predominantly drinks at home (like alcoholics) while Boomers predominantly drank in clubs, bars, social venues. They left the house.

The “third place” is disappearing. A third place is somewhere that’s neither your home nor your office. And that third place is dying.

Yes, I know the comments will mention capitalism, everything being expensive, whatever. But this has always been true. People with even fewer resources still did it. This is a generational shift where people justify their sedentarism and isolation with tremendous energy.

On top of everything, screens are consuming us. When you index 2012 as 100% and track forward, you see youth alcohol use declining while screen time grows at an almost exponential rate.

Screens demand nothing from us except continued scrolling and attention. So we don’t connect with people. You can be glued to a screen and never speak to anyone. With alcohol, not so much.

Look at this wild chart: Half of Gen Z have never had a boyfriend or girlfriend before reaching adulthood. In contrast, 78% of Boomers, 76% of Gen X and 65% of Millennials reached this human milestone.

Massive experience gap in human connection.

And it’s not just romantic connection, close friendships collapsed too. In the 90s, 33% of people had more than 10 friends. Only 3% had zero friends. Today, 10% of women and 15% of men live in absolute solitude.

Our Non-Alcoholic Future

The non-alcoholic beverage market is growing like never before. People want to drink beer and wine, but not get drunk. There’s still a status component in drinking, and a desire to be in the places where alcohol allowed connection.

Christian, my cofounder, once told me: “You’re not paying for the drink. You pay for access to these people, this bar, this vibe.” He was right. There’s nothing wrong with that.

As alcohol consumption falls, time with friends falls. Use of other dangerous substances like cannabis rises. And our addiction to screens explodes.

I’m not telling you to drink alcohol.

But alcohol was probably how you incentivized yourself to take more social risks and connect with strangers who might become important in your life. Humans are social animals. We need other humans, without question.

So if you’re not going to drink, at least make the effort. Tolerate the discomfort. Go meet someone new before this year ends.

The economics of warfare have inverted, and after Ukraine, Latin America is the next to suffer from it.

The “Democratization” of Air Superiority

In Mexico, the cartels today operate a mid-sized logistical airline.

According to Homeland Security, there are roughly 328 drone flights per day crossing the US border. That is 10,000 flights a month. They aren’t just moving drugs; they are moving heavy weaponry and surveillance equipment.

The growth is exponential. We are seeing a shift from crude experiments to standardized, industrial-scale drone operations.

In the 1990s, a military-grade drone cost $300,000. Today, a drone with military capacity—capable of carrying an explosive payload—costs $500.

Compare that to the legacy cost of defense:

• Infantry Soldier Training: ~$50,000

• Javelin Missile: ~$178,000

• M1 Abrams Tank: ~$10 Million

This is a logarithmic military disaster. You can now take out a $10 million piece of hardware with a $500 toy bought on the internet. This destroys the asymmetry that kept governments in charge. When a criminal group can field an air force for the price of a used car, the state loses its monopoly on power.

The Ukraine Precedent

If you want to see the future of Latin American security, look at the timeline of the war in Ukraine.

In 2022, most casualties came from artillery. But look at how the lines cross. Slowly, then suddenly, drones became the primary cause of death and injury.

Criminal groups in Latin America are sending men to Ukraine to learn. The “pilots” flying drones in Ecuador or Colombia are still unexperienced, but they will improve.

The Supply Chain Trap

Latin America has no way to defend itself against this future because we can’t make our own defense systems.

We are entering an era of “Digital Clientelism”, depending entirely on foreign powers for our digital and physical security.

• Ukraine produces 2.2 million drones a year.

• Russia produces 1.5 million.

• China produces 4 million.

• Latam? Close to nothing.

China controls 70% of the global drone market and roughly 90% of the commercial market in the US. They own the supply chain: the rotors, the brushless motors, the batteries.

Speaking of batteries: Latin America sits on 60% of the world’s Lithium.

We have the fuel for the robot revolution, but we lack the industrial capacity to process it. We are digging dirt while China sells us back the batteries at a premium to power the drones that undermine our own security.

The Privatization of Sovereignty

This leads to a metric I call the Privatization of Sovereignty. It’s the ratio of private security guards to public police officers.

In a high-trust state like Poland, there are 0.4 private guards for every police officer. In the US, it’s about 1:1.

In Guatemala? 7 private guards for every cop. In Brazil? 4.5.

The wealthy and the middle class are effectively seceding from the state’s protection. We treat this as normal in Latin America: 24/7 lobby security, bomb-sniffing dogs at the mall, electric fences. But it’s not normal. It is a sign that the state has failed to enforce the law.

The “Green Zone” Future

As drone warfare makes it impossible for under-funded states to control their entire territory, we will see a hard bifurcation of our geography.

We are moving toward a world of Green Zones and Red Zones.

• Green Zones: Hyper-secured, surveilled bubbles where the elite and productive economy live (think certain neighborhoods in Santiago, Mexico City, or Bogotá).

• Red Zones: Large swathes of territory surrendered to non-state actors because projecting power there is too expensive.

By 2040, 80% of the region’s GDP could be generated within these Green Zones, while the rest of the country falls into a vacuum of governance.

The Automation of Disinformation

Finally, remember that AI automates flight paths just as good as it scales human manipulation.

Latin America is uniquely vulnerable to cognitive warfare. There is a direct correlation between institutional trust and resilience to disinformation.

Countries like Taiwan or Finland educate their populations to spot propaganda because they have existential enemies (China and Russia). In Latin America, our trust in institutions is so low, and our “corruption fatigue” so high, that we are easy targets for AI-generated propaganda.

The Way Out

We cannot regulate our way out of this, and we cannot import our way to safety. The only sovereign defense is talent (you should learn how LLMs work, for example).

We need to stop being passive consumers of technology and start being engineers. We need to understand the math behind the models and the code behind the drones. If we don’t, we are just spectators in our own decline.

Combine ASML, Novo Nordisk, LVMH, SAP, Hermes, and ten others and you’d match the value of the iPhone maker.

In 2008, right before the financial crisis, the European Union’s economy was 10% larger than the United States. Today, the US economy is significantly larger, and China has just overtaken the EU for the first time.

Europe is stagnant, aging, and regulated to the brink of insanity. But it also holds a chokehold on the specific technologies that keep the modern world running.

Here is the reality of Europe today.

The Great Stagnation

Europe is still a manufacturing powerhouse, responsible for about one-third of the world’s exports. But when it comes to value creation, they are losing the game.

Look at the top 100 most valuable companies in the world. The US has 62. China has 17. Europe? Only 18.

And if you look at what those companies do, the problem gets worse. The US dominates in tech and innovation. The European list is luxury bags (LVMH, Hermes), legacy meds (Novo Nordisk, Roche), and oil (Shell, Total). There is only one true tech giant in Europe: ASML.

In startups, the US has 700+ companies worth over $1 billion. China has over 300. The EU barely cracks 100.

Why? Two main reasons: Investment and Energy.

Europe doesn’t invest enough in R&D compared to the US or South Korea. But more importantly, they broke their own energy market. Electricity in Europe costs 2.5x what it costs in the US. Natural gas costs 4.5x.

This was a self-inflicted wound. Driven by disinformation campaigns (often fueled by Russian interests) and the panic after Fukushima, countries like Germany shut down their nuclear plants. They traded energy independence for a reliance on Russian gas and expensive imports.

The Microwave Salesman Who Bought a Robot Empire

While Europe was sleeping on energy, China was buying their companies and using that acquired knowledge to build their own.

China spent years acquiring European manufacturing capability. They bought Syngenta (Swiss agri-tech), Pirelli (Italian tires), and Volvo. But the most embarrassing loss for Europe was KUKA.

KUKA was the crown jewel of German engineering. Along with the Swiss firm ABB and Japan’s FANUC, they controlled the global market for robotic arms. If you saw a robot building a car in a factory, it was likely a KUKA.

About ten years ago, the founder of a Chinese company called Midea approached KUKA. Midea makes microwaves, blenders, heaters, etc. He wanted to do business but the Germans, in their high castle of engineering superiority, ignored him.

So, the microwave salesman went home, raised billions and started secretly buying KUKA shares.

By the time Germany realized what was happening, Midea owned a controlling stake. The European business community panicked. They tried to get Siemens or ABB to save KUKA. Everyone said no.

Today, KUKA is Chinese and China, which used to be a nobody in robotics, is now the largest market for industrial robots in the world.

The Demographic Cliff

Europe’s other massive problem is that it is running out of Europeans.

To replace a population, you need a fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman. Europe is at 1.4. The only country slightly bucking the trend is France, but that is driven almost entirely by migration, not by the locals suddenly feeling more romantic.

In 2004, the number of Europeans over 65 surpassed the number of those under 15. The gap has been widening ever since.

The continent is turning into a massive retirement home. Voters want pensions protected, but they don’t want the migration required to fund those pensions, nor do they want to raise the retirement age. It is a mathematical impossibility that hasn’t hit the breaking point yet. But it will.

The Hidden Monopolies

If you stopped reading here, you’d think Europe is finished. But remember ASML?

ASML is a Dutch company that builds Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines. These are the most complex machines humans have ever built. They are the only machines capable of making the advanced chips inside your iPhone, your NVIDIA GPU, and modern missiles.

No one else can make them. Not the US, not China, not Japan. The entire global digital economy rests on one company in the Netherlands.

But it goes deeper. Europe has mastered the art of the “Hidden Monopoly.”

• Carl Zeiss (Germany): Makes the optical lenses ASML needs. No Zeiss, no chips.

• GTT (France): Holds a 95% market share in the membranes needed to transport Liquid Natural Gas (LNG).

• VAT Group (Switzerland): Controls 75% of the market for high-vacuum valves required for precision manufacturing.

China might be the factory of the world, but their factories run on European machines. Russia’s war machine? It depends on European industrial tooling to manufacture artillery.

Europe has no Google, no Facebook, no Amazon. But they are humanity’s “back end.” They control the physical infrastructure of high-tech manufacturing.

The Regulation Paradox

Finally, there is the European obsession with regulation.

Sometimes, this is great. The EU forced Apple to switch to USB-C, which was a win for humanity. The GDPR forced Google and Apple to connect Airdrop between Android and iOS.

But it can be self-destructive.

We have an internet broken by cookie banners because of EU laws. Apple Intelligence and many new AI features aren’t launching in Europe because of the AI Act. The regulation is so stifling that ambitious European founders incorporate in Delaware and move to San Francisco rather than stay.

Europe is a paradox: A region that regulated itself into stagnation, allowed its energy security to collapse, and sold its best robotics to microwave salesmen. Yet, it remains the silent engineer behind the world’s most critical technologies.

Is Europe dead? No. But it is certainly waking up to a very harsh hangover.

As our minds accumulate experiences and knowledge, our perception of time accelerates. It moves fastest when we do repetitive, mindless tasks, like social media scrolling or youtube hopping.

Focus slows time.

You only need focus when you’re doing something worthy of your time. But our brains crave rest and the easy dopamine of candy and routine. Thinking hard about interesting problems or ideas feels like a waste of calories.

Boredom, at the beginning, also slows time.

The first few minutes of boredom can be painful and unbearable. You don’t even realize how little you think about the muscles your hand uses to open instagram or scroll twitter. You need something, anything, to fill the time.

Yet boredom, unlike focus or routine, offers magic if you let it.

When you resist and let boredom in, time fades away. Your overstimulated mind finally exhales. It stop clinging to half-formed thoughts and expands. Random ideas connect. Old memories resurface. And if you let boredom stay, it’ll help your brain imagine your next big project.

Projects are worthless unless you execute them.

Execution has only one true definition: releasing the project into the world.
To be a writer, you need readers.
To be an artist, you need an audience.
To be an entrepreneur, you need customers.

Every day, every hour, every second you keep your project to yourself, you lose an opportunity to learn. Projects are never perfect, and you have no idea how good (or bad) an idea is until its intended audience sees it. Only by launching your ideas do you discover how to make them better, and better, and better.

So every second you wait to release it is a wasted opportunity to learn something new.

That’s why everything is urgent.

The irony of hating is that it makes me hand over control of my emotions to the very people I hate. It’s a bad habit that shows how much I still have to mature.

“Prudence and skepticism are virtues,” they’ll say. And I agree, but only when paired with genuine intellectual curiosity and experiments that let you learn. The mission is to avoid paralyzing inaction at all costs.

“That idea’s been tried,” is the proud critique a pessimist levels at the naïve idealist who dares to dream of changing the course of the world. If you challenge them, they’ll defend it as intellectual analysis, informed by their vast experience.

“The problem is the system,” the realist explains to people trying to bring change. Their message lets you pin problems on an abstract mechanism of which they’re victims, never on things under individual control.

The crime of pessimists is dragging smart people into the abyss of inaction, crafting messages that make them feel part of an elite for discrediting other people’s ideas.

Assuming what you’ll do might fail is easy. Waiting for the ideal moment to act, risk-free, is the comfortable path. The reward is waking up one day and finding yourself surrounded by friends stuck in unsatisfying routines, where no one wants to see others achieve what they themselves could not.

Realism and pessimism protect each other to destroy the optimist at their most vulnerable moment: the instant they decide to act.

Pessimism is defeated with simple logic and probability. Your ideas are neither good nor bad until you test them. The best new ideas are, by definition, improbable crazy things. Otherwise, someone would have already made them real. Trying wrests victory from these intellectual vampires.

Pessimists believe this strategy of hopelessness is responsible. They think that dampening excessive optimism protects society from waste and tragedy. If it were up to them, humanity would be in a cave on the African steppe, terrified of facing the saber-toothed tiger.

The problem is that this is exactly what their ancestors did. Many humans today are the genetic heirs of cowards who chose to hide rather than fight. The brave were eaten. Evolution rewards survival.

For the pessimist, destroying optimism feeds them. The realist enjoys the status quo of indecision. Both follow sensible tactics: seeking full consensus, following processes, and studying feasibility with caution. That’s how they suffocate a brilliant mind before it learns that, to win, you must enjoy uncertainty.

But what do you do when you’re blocked by a sense of insecurity? Easy: take it seriously and calmly write down what’s the worst that could happen, mathematically and rationally.

A pessimistic mind will imagine ridiculous scenarios where you lose your life or harm many people. Now assign a realistic probability to each horror you come up with. It won’t surprise you that the number for each terrible option is close to zero.

What can actually go wrong, almost always, isn’t that bad and isn’t that irreversible.

If your ideas have a 50% chance of success, on the second attempt it’s 75% likely. By the fifth attempt, it’s already 97% likely. And with each attempt, learning something new makes your success even more inevitable.

The next calculation is to evaluate, if it goes wrong, how easy it would be to fix. Few things are as irreversible as our anxiety wants us to believe.

Hopelessness is nothing more than the justification of mediocrity. Every successful artist had decades of being ignored. Every successful company that came out of nowhere had years of failures and humiliation behind it. This very article was revised dozens of times—and it may be revised again in the future.

Etch this into your mind: in most cases, the worst that can happen is nothing.

Contracts, courts, laws. They make Miami so great, despite having so much of the worst of Latin America.

It's such a beautiful place. Creative architecture fuses with nature in a kind of Hispanic Singaporean heatstroke dream, new buildings grow every day, while crime is super low (safer than LA) in a Spanish-speaking city where a flock of exotic cars keeps your childlike ambition alive.

Never mind that those cars are mostly rentals in the U.S. capital of scams and insurance fraud.

In Miami, everybody drives or takes an Uber. Few walk. That didn't stop the city from building three passenger train systems. One of them is the fastest private long-distance railway in America (Brightline), connecting Miami to Orlando.

It has two seasons: From October to March, it's full of wealthy people escaping winter. From April to September, the atmosphere will either melt your eyeballs or drown you in a hurricane.

Mediocrity here is unpredictable. In the same block, the most authentic and delicious restaurant will be side by side with a tourist trap demanding 30% tips, while serving well-plated shopping mall food. Prices in Miami don't correlate with quality.

It's a bunch of paradoxes living together in a metro area whose economy achieves more per year ($533B) than the entire countries of Chile ($330B) or Colombia ($418B). Florida, its state, has an economy almost as big as Mexico.

It feels like an interdimensional Colombian neighborhood, surrounded by Argentine suburbia with a Cuban/Venezuelan enclave. One where people trust the system and enjoy the feeling of fairness and the reward of hard work.

It has to be the rule of law, right? What else is different?

It's easy to argue that everything started with real estate money laundering coming from narcos in the 80s. But isn't that true of our own Latin American towns as well? How come they aren't this rich?

The politicians, businesspeople, workers, and customers are all the same Latin Americans you find in Bogotá, Santiago or CDMX. Why do they make more money here?

There's so much to dislike about the U.S. system. Americans are lonely, scared about going bankrupt for an illness, struggling against crazy rents in a culture where every interaction is a monetary transaction.

But I have to admire the evidence of what Latin America could be, expressed in the reality of Miami.

The cultures of our countries are so much richer, our cities more interesting, our people more fun. Imagine what we could achieve if we, collectively, decided to enforce a high-trust and respect for contracts, courts and laws.

If Miami, a single city, amidst a Caribbean swamp, was able to build this behemoth of an economy with it, imagine the dream of what the Latin American continent could be.

You can't escape the short-video doomscroll machine that has ravaged your attention, killed your creativity and made you stop reading books.

You try, of course. You block Reddit on your laptop, delete Instagram, swear to never install TikTok and only use Twitter as a website. But it doesn't matter. All of them are now the same and you have nowhere to run.

"My friends are there," you tell yourself. If you stop checking DMs and sharing Reels, you'll lose touch with them. You're not wrong. They're as addicted as you are to the doomscroll machine. And you're in part to blame.

Every cool, funny, insightful, raunchy and risky video you share carries your feelings for them. The ones you secretly like and hope they get the message. The ones you miss too much but don't know how to talk to anymore. The ones you're starting to forget and whose connection you barely keep alive with obscure inside jokes you both still share.

These emotions are real.

And every time you send them a video you saw on the doomscroll, they feel those feelings. And the machine infects them a bit more. They think of you, but they have forgotten how to talk to you. So they react with emojis: laugh, splash, fire, heart.

You uninstall everything for a while and block as many apps as your work allows, because some of us work inside these damn things. And when the apps are not where they used to be, you realize for the first time —

My God, your fingers open them unconsciously.

You watch your own fingers, with a mind of their own, try to open a deleted app without even thinking.

The doomscroll machine has trained you, like a dog, to never leave.

This time, though, you won't be back. You have so much free time. You find your Kindle again, listen to new music, reinstall the educational apps, take the courses you always wanted to learn, walk around parks, watch some shows on your list. Maybe you'll even read an actual paper book.

A green circle in a WhatsApp message drops the doomscroll machine back onto your screen. You click it. It's a disappointing, deformed meme shared by a family member. But it brings back memories of those videos from the people you love.

You remember your internet friends, the ones living elsewhere, with whom you loved spending time. But as we grow old, we settle in different parts of the planet and drift apart. Except for those stories shared on Instagram. The TikToks and Reels in DMs that reconnect you to the person you were when you were with them.

You reinstall one app, just to check, really quick. The machine kidnaps you again.

Those books remain unfinished.

We're evolving into a hybrid species, half human, half phone. Our minds today are already in-meshed with powerful data centers.

We're curing diseases by manipulating the very code that makes us human, potentially allowing our generation to live up to a healthy one hundred years of age.

We're dying off as a species, having less and less kids every generation. Happiness and wealth are forged within families. And our families keep shrinking, while our despair grows.

We are masters of atoms, exotic materials, hyper advanced chips and vaccines that replicate the basic molecules of life.

Technology enabled us to witness the origin of the universe, used black holes as gravitational lenses to take a peek beyond our theories, and even forged tiny black holes in our own atmosphere.

And we're on the cusp of creating a new, eternal, digital, intelligent species.

Our grandparents, born in the middle of the 20th century, live in the weird sci-fi future of 2024, stunned by the wonders we can build, saddened by the consequences of our behavior in nature, and overwhelmed by all that they will never truly understand.

In the East, democracy is either a joke or a threat. Russia massacres Ukrainians, scared of what a free democracy in an ex-Soviet state could mean for its regent. China, meanwhile, laughs at the inefficient and corrupt Western countries, while it keeps building the spectacular infrastructure and massive cities where nobody lives.

In the West, we take for granted the gifts of our ancestors. The right to vote, the rule of law, self-determination, the freedoms of speech, of thought and of control of our own bodies. Capitalism, given its free nature, gets abused by the powerful, from any direction. Education, the only weapon that cannot be taken away from us, is becoming either more elitist or just ineffective.

Democracies and dictatorships clash. The arsenal of democracy is superior in every way. But in a world flooded with gasoline, it doesn't matter whose match is better.

Dictatorships dance between controlling their citizens and abusing the power of science and technology. They limit access to the digital crack that democracies can't seem to stop. All while relying on force to compensate for the lack of quality in the output of their diminishing demographic.

Democracies swing between political extremes, their attention damaged by instant gratification. We absorb realistic fake news, accept degraded institutions, and consume addictive digital drugs powered by delightful con artists or foreign dictatorships, manipulating our minds while they exploit our freedom of speech. Our own fascist wannabes, happy to sell off our civilization in exchange for a few years of unobstructed power before their own dementia consumes them.

You don't have the choice to give in or give up. You have to fight.

Your only weapons are your mind, your body and your people. Nothing else.

Your mind needs books, schools and mentors. Education, knowledge, ideas and perspectives. It needs friends who are better than you, that inspire you and make you want to push you harder.

Your mind also needs to fight the traps of this poisonous bullshit. A healthy mind knows how to escape the culture wars, the tribal fights over the stupid idea of a static identity and the normal mental diseases of human beings.

Your body needs exercise, good food and good sleep. It does. And so does your mind. The body is the mind.

And the people in your life are all you have. Your true friends, your close family, the people you choose to spend your time with. You are a human being of Planet Earth and you need others to be happy.

Choose the humans around you. Help them almost unconditionally. Lift them up. Listen to them with no need to reply. Mentor them with no expectation other than the satisfaction of seeing them happier. No human has ever built great things alone. But humans working together have always made incredible things.

Enjoy true art. Art is joy and pain expressed with raw honesty. Dictatorships hate art and have rarely mastered its disciplines. Good art requires freedom of speech. Never, ever, take that right for granted.

Understand that, in this world, evil exists. Violence and war should never be our goals, but they are sometimes necessary. Peace in our world doesn't come from diplomacy and good will alone. Peace is a result of deterrence. And for deterrence to be credible, nations must be capable of the violence required to stop evil.

Understand that, in this world, addictions can overwhelm us. From the sugar in our drinks to the likes in our phones. Addiction is a disease and it needs treatment, intervention and help. Willpower alone is often not the solution. And you're not weak to ask for help.

Humans are a species full of contradictions.

Humans need to explore. We've gone to space, and the bottom of the sea. In our minds, through math and physics, we've seen the edge of the universe and the inside of atoms. We've mastered our atmosphere and built massive cities to fulfill any and every need our animal bodies might have.

We're even at the point at which our math has synthesized our culture and can mimic a weighted average of our intelligence.

But we're also animals.

And, as animals, we need the green of nature. The smell of clean wind. The heat and brightness of our star. The embrace of other people. The flavor of who we love. The presence of other animals in our lives, with their sounds, smells and even taste.

We can't escape our genetic code. We want to learn, explore and be free.

Our need for freedom, in fact, is so powerful, that in history, it has also been the one thing we are willing to sacrifice our lives for.

We are the children of conquerors. Our ancestors triumphed over ice ages, global wars, famines, pandemics, toxic cities, and cults of death. Humanity has emerged victorious from every existential struggle it has faced.

Our new threat is the fight for the freedom of our minds against the yoke of dictatorships.

Dictatorships want us, imperfect humans, to be controlled. To have access to no addictive substances, other than they want to feed us for their benefit . To do what their totalitarian machine wants us to.

Democracies need us, imperfect humans, to choose. And they use the mechanisms of capital to negotiate our attention and tune our choices to the needs of those aspiring to govern and build the future of our civilization.

This year, 2024, half of humanity chooses in democratic elections if we want to keep the right to choose or embrace dictators and degraded rights. While, at the same time, established regimes throw literal bombs to aspiring young democracies.

That's the war we will fight in 2024.

Don't forget. Your weapons are your focused mind, the effort you invest in your body and your people. Nothing else.

Fred Again bottles an intimate feeling in an electronic rhythm. And makes you understand and accept it in a song. Combining poetry, piano, beats, and voice.

Fred Again is also VERY hated because, to enjoy him, he demands that you concentrate.

I discovered him 2 years ago with "Kyle (i found you)," where he takes a video from the poet Guante, disassembles the poetry into 4 major phrases and makes you feel them:

Fred Again isn't enjoyed the first time. In your mind you'll think:

• Why does the lyrics matter in an electronic song?

• Why is he so famous if the beat isn't that danceable?

• What is he doing with his fingers at concerts?

• Why are the song titles so strange?

• I don't want to do homework to listen to techno!

During the pandemic, when he started making music on his own, the love of his life got very sick. That's how his career began: between music and his phone, between composing and the hospital.

Fred writes songs, composes rhythms, melodies, beats, mixes, creates audiovisuals, and organizes his own shows. In the video for "Julia (deep diving)," you see his creative process:

Maybe you know his song "Marea (we lost dancing)," which is very energetic and ideal for dancing in a club.

Or "Turn On The Lights" with Swedish House Mafia, which is already a phenomenon in the playlists of Armin Van Buuren, Skrillex, Bizarrap, and Anyma.

Or his spectacular "Boiler Room," where he mixed his discography in a London club and popularized his ability to use the beat sampler live (minute 35:55).

I saw Fred in New York when, together with Skrillex and Four Tet, they filled Madison Square Garden at the launch of the album the three made in Brooklyn: Quest for Fire. With the star song: Rumble.

Fred with Skrillex is a nuclear explosion. Sonny's energy, Four Tet's discipline, and Fred's honesty create a musical texture that makes you scream, jump, dance, and cry all in one package.

It was the best concert of my life.

Then I saw him again, alone, at Estéreo Picnic. And I understood Fred Again's message with his albums. The immense and beautiful humanity he brings.

Fred Again's current show is almost a theatrical work. Instagram clips, combined with his piano, his live beat sampler, and his spectacular and minimalist use of lights, colors, and a unique way of encouraging the audience.

At minute 46:12 of that concert, you'll see Fred take a poem explaining that depression is a party, break it into pieces, and turn it into a real party (49:26). The song is called "Sabrina (i am a party)"

At 1:00:20 you see his masterful use of the piano creating an explosive moment with Marea. Or at 1:10:31 where he starts recording the audience and makes a girl go from dancing shyly to dancing as if no one was watching her.

The only correct way to dance.

I know it's impossible to ask you this, but if for one hour you could put all your attention and focus on the concert above, you would understand me. It's like seeing a MoMA exhibit.

OK, two more stories.

Fred never gives interviews or talks much about himself. He's reserved and a bit awkward with the press. In part, he says, because in his videos and songs he is transparent.

An example is "Billie (loving arms)": A close friend had a broken heart, so he and his roommates took her to a festival outside London to fill her with love and friendship. Look at the context at the beginning of the video and feel the rest:

There are many types of love. And the love that comes from true friendship is as deep, necessary, and real as romantic love. It hurts similarly, heals similarly.

In the powerful "Me (heavy)," his only song where he is the center, in which he speaks to his love, sick, in the hospital. Listen to the lyrics with the context I gave you:

It's the same apartment as "Dermot (see yourself in my eyes)," together with the same roommates. The same ones from Billie. The same ones from Angie. Transparent.

In "Admit it (u don't want 2)" he takes a short phrase and turns it into an entire story. At the beginning of the song he tells us:

Until the song rises and rises and rises to the drop, where he reveals the complete phrase:

And then he drills it into us, like a request, a demand:

Yes, Fred comes from a connected family in England and his childhood neighbor is the legendary Brian Eno. But his art is undeniable.

It saddens me a bit that Fred is so famous now. Not for hipster reasons, but because part of his artistic process included sharing that pain, affection, anguish, and joy of a normal life.

Fred is today one of the fastest-growing DJs in the world. Filling stadiums, sharing stages with giants, and receiving millions of "listens" on Spotify and other platforms.

He will no longer be able to compose on the subway, go to a park to mix alone, or get lost in the crowd at a party.

Fame, as Rosalía says, is a bad lover. Hopefully his quality, even as it changes, will transform into something more powerful.

If not, he might do like Skrillex, who after disappearing for 10 years, brought us two albums as spectacular as Quest of Fire and Don't Get Too Close.

I believe in Fred.

Amy is my first photo on Instagram. I knew her for more than twelve years, ten of which we didn't get along so well. She was wild, independent, explosive, energetic, and beautiful.

In her old house, she was the leader of a gang. My evidence was the pack of cats that shouted for her to come out in the depths of the night. And how expert she was at violating the house security and escaping.

She would sometimes return injured, dirty, but happy and hungry. With inexhaustible energy and impressive acrobatic ability. Her biological mother had been a fat restaurant cat, and her childhood was full of violence and trauma before being adopted.

One day she returned with a small hole in her ear, the product of some street fight whose story we'll never know. But Amy surely won and, after her victory, decided to retire from the streets.

For almost ten years, our interaction was transactional. I wasn't her father; I just wanted to be with her mother. She wasn't my cat and tolerated my presence. Our common interest in her mother was what united us. If there was love, it was only visible at night, when she would curl up on my legs, seeking warmth.

The day Amy's mom got sick and my world collapsed, Amy was there for me. I remember coming home from the hospital destroyed, anxious about an operation with an uncertain outcome, crying. Amy approached me and without saying anything, for the first time, lay down on my chest.

From that day on, Amy would seek me out to brighten my day, rub against my body, rest on top of me, and demand that I scratch her. Ten years of not letting me touch her changed in an instant.

A few weeks later, the pandemic arrived. And we spent more time together than ever.

Amy was strict in her demand for love. For an exact number of minutes, she demanded affection, caresses, and massages. At the end of those minutes, trying to touch her would result in my hands being destroyed by her fangs and claws.

Over time, we learned to dance. She understood my gesture of "it's time for affection" and came obediently. I understood her gesture of "don't touch me anymore" and withdrew my hands before she attacked them. We had complete understanding of each other's mutual needs.

I called her "Amy Yolanda." She, surely, called me "old son of a bitch."

Amy was seventeen years old and had renal insufficiency, which is another medical way of saying "she's 17 years old." For two years, Amy needed hydrations from a Ringer's lactate bag through a needle in her back that slowly dripped down over 5 minutes, every 48 hours. Amy hated every second, but understood it was good for her.

Every minute of Amy's life was fun.

At 8am she would start shouting, something she never did as a kitten. Between 9am and 10am, she demanded to be petted like kneading bread on the living room carpet. If the day was sunny, she would go to the terrace where she would toast herself. The hotter the better, and the terrace could get VERY hot.

If I went out to the terrace, she would also come out to eat herbs from the garden and, above all, to scratch her back on the hot surface of the terrace. There she also demanded to be kneaded. In my mind, she was a brioche bread.

In the afternoon she would be between the terrace or the living room. Between the bed, the sofa, or our desks. For her, our having Zoom calls was unacceptable. We could work focused, but talking to other people was an absolute offense. As soon as she saw us talking to strangers over the Internet, she would start screaming at the top of her lungs.

We knew it was 6:30pm because she would curl up on the sofa and take a nap. She loved watching TV with us at night. And delivery chicken, bird videos, and imagining how she would dismember them. She did it several times in her youth, with pride.

Not letting her sleep with us was impossible. She was capable, for hours, of meowing and scratching the door with fanatical determination. If she didn't sleep between our legs, nobody slept in that house.

The last two years, we started traveling with her between towns and Airbnbs. The first day was terrible for her—how dare we take her out of her palace? Then, she loved the countryside, exploring a new house, and making herself the owner of that space. Without fail.

If a place was too cold, she would scream at us non-stop. Warm areas made her happy and calm.

At night, when it was just her and me, she always came to me. In the last year, I didn't call her; she knew. She would approach slowly, looking into my eyes. Little by little, she would climb my body. If I was focused, she would leave me alone for a while, until she got tired of waiting. With her front paw, she would start calling for my attention.

"Hey! I'm here. Give me love."

But it wasn't strong or violent, as she always was. It was a gentle touch, like when someone wants to tell you in line that you dropped something. I always understood and would start my routine. Warming her ears, scratching her cheeks, scratching her chin, massaging her neck, caressing her back, waiting for her to bite me, closing my fist, letting her scrape her gums on my knuckles.

We shared food together. We both ate pork rinds, chicken, and yogurt. We both liked dulce de leche and creamy things.

I never wanted a cat; she just arrived. And Amy never needed a man; it just happened. We shared a house, love, and a sofa.

Today, twelve years after meeting her and until the end of my life, I will live with the memory that, between my 20s and 30s, I had a cat. I loved a cat. Her name is Amy.

"Estamos llegando al puerto del Museo", anunció una voz en todo el barco, despertando a Juan de su siesta. Su cabeza reposaba en el pecho de Eliane, quien lo abrazaba de forma protectora. A pesar de sus ciento uno años de edad, Juan la veía tan hermosa como la conoció muchas vidas atrás.

“Prepárense para desembarcar”, continuó la voz, “recuerden que en El Museo de la Primera Pandemia cada minuto cuenta.”

—¿Las tienes? —preguntó Eliane al ver que Juan despertaba.
—Yo también te amo —respondió Juan con sarcasmo— y claro que no las iba a olvidar.

Juan sacó dos pastillas negras y una botella de agua de su bolsa de viaje. Le dio una a Eliane y sostuvo la otra entre sus dedos, contemplando su superficie brillante y reflectiva. De reojo, notó que Eliane hacía lo mismo.

—Este es un buen momento —le aseguró Juan a Eliane.
—¿No van a fallar, verdad?
—Es mi cumpleaños, Eli Bi. Confía. ¿Cuándo te he fallado con sustancias?
—Todo lo que me das me hace efecto primero a mí y más fuerte. Quizás deba esperar.
—No —declaró Juan con convicción—, no en este caso. Funcionarán al tiempo.

Juan le dio un beso en la mejilla y, mirándola a los ojos, se tomó la pastilla con un fuerte trago de agua. Eliane hizo lo mismo. En el horizonte, en medio de un mar de un azul irreal, se alcanzaban a ver los mega domos del Museo.

Cuatro personas más salieron a la cubierta del barco y se acercaron a la pareja. Tres de ellos asiáticos, jóvenes y en sus veintes. Los tres iban tomados de la mano y hablando animados. El otro, un hombre grande, de brazos anchos y tatuados, de unos sesenta años y una actitud de no querer estar ahí.

Juan sintió el familiar dolor en sus músculos tras despertar. Era un recordatorio que, por ahora, seguía vivo. Como un reflejo, masajeó los hombros de Elaine donde a él mismo le dolía y se preparó para conocer a sus compañeros de viaje.

—¿No están muy emocionados? —preguntó la mujer asiática a todos los demás, viendo fijamente a Eliane. En la mente de Juan, no era más que una niña.
—No tanto como ustedes —respondió Eliane sonriendo—, ¿de qué zona vienen?
—Zona Segura Nueve —contestó uno de los acompañantes de la chica en tono monótono.
—Wow, —dijo Juan con auténtico asombro— ¿Nueve Singapore?
—No, no, no —negó la chica—. No podemos pagar eso. Yo soy de Nueve Okinawa. Ellos viven conmigo. Siu es de Nueve Busan, lo conocí antes del colapso de la barrera ecológica. Y él es Feng. Creció en los túneles de Guangzhou. Lo rescatamos hace poco y Siu y yo nos enamoramos de él. Es de nuestro pod ahora.

Eliane no pudo evitar sonreír ante la forma casual en la que la chica compartía detalles íntimos de sus vidas. Sobre todo con la incomodidad que Siu mostraba.

—¿Y tú? —le preguntó Eliane a ella—. ¿Cómo te llamas?
—¡Riko!, Riko Meier —dijo ella con entusiasmo y una ligera venia.

Juan tomó nota mental. Riko era claramente japonesa, pero su apellido la hacía mitad alemana. Y se notaba. Alta, de cabello naranja oscuro, ojos miel y una curiosa piel canela. Algo en ella era familiar.

Riko tenía tomado de la mano derecha a Siu y de la izquierda a Feng. Siu tenía pelo largo y desordenado, con ojos negros y un bigote timido que apenas le crecía. Con un poco de sobrepeso y casi tan alto como Riko. El más tímido de los tres.

Feng, por otro lado, era pequeño. Su rostro parecía recuperarse de una terrible golpiza. Su nariz estaba desviada y su mentón había sufrido una fractura. Uno de sus párpados estaba hinchado y tenía un hombro caído con respecto al otro. Sin embargo, lucía una sonrisa inmensa y no paraba de mirar el mar y El Museo en el horizonte.

—Riko —repitió Juan—, como el "Ri" de "Matsuri", ¿verdad?

Riko dio un pequeño grito y abrió su boca con asombro al viejo hombre que acababa de descubrir el secreto de su nombre.

—Nunca había conocido a alguien de afuera de Nueve que hablara japonés.
—Oh, no, él no habla japonés —intervino Eliane con burla—, sólo pretende saber lo suficiente para distraer.

El hombre tatuado los miraba de lejos. Su rostro era una combinación de curiosidad y fingida indiferencia. Eliane notó su mirada y el hombre miró en otra dirección.

—¿Y tú? —le preguntó Eliane al hombre—. Si vamos a pasar todo el día juntos en El Museo deberíamos conocernos.

Todo el grupo volteó a verlo, excepto Juán que sonreía al ver los domos del Museo hacerse cada vez más grandes. Tras segundos de incómodo silencio, el hombre lo rompió diciendo, en el más norteamericano de los acentos:

—Dustin.

Y no dijo nada más porque, segundos después, las luces de bienvenida del Museo se activaron. Dos hilos de un laser blanco como la leche conectaron el puerto con el barco, mientras que un arcoiris de color creó un show de luces muy brillantes, en la mañana, en medio del mar.

“La fundación Pérez, la fundación Hayashibara y el fondo soberano de América Latina les dan la bienvenida al Museo de la Primera Pandemia. Toda la experiencia será auto guiada. Aunque la mayoría de exhibiciones son simulaciones aumentadas, algunos de los especímenes que verán son especies vivas. Por lo que nuestros visitantes deben pasar por un proceso de desinfección y vestir los uniformes proporcionados por El Museo".

"Recuerden usar los lentes de realidad aumentada todo el tiempo, de otro modo, el mundo se verá muy gris. En caso de emergencia, solo pidan ayuda. El sistema automático del Museo los cuidará. Recuerden que El Museo está en pruebas y ustedes son apenas la tercera expedición".

"Valoramos que nos compartan sus opiniones al final y esperamos verlos en nuestra gran inauguración al público en tres meses, el primero  de julio de 2086. Muchas gracias y disfruten El Museo".

Los tres grupos se dividieron y entraron a cabinas distintas. Tras múltiples duchas, baños de luz ultravioleta y más duchas, Juan y Eliane terminaron en un cuarto frío y privado donde una pantalla en la pared les pedía dejar toda su ropa del "exterior" y ponerse el uniforme del Museo. Parecía ropa de astronauta.

—Me debiste advertir que el inicio sería tan clínico— le reclamó Eliane a Juan.
—No tenía idea de nada de esto. Mi rodilla está en llamas.
—Mi piel está en llamas con estas duchas.

Juan vio a Eliane desnuda y, a pesar de los años, reflexionó sobre lo feliz que era al verla desvestirse y vestirse una vez más. En las arrugas de su cuerpo veía al mismo tiempo a una mujer fuerte a pesar su vejez, así como a la joven que vivía por siempre en su mente. Se sintió fascinado de que ese sentimiento nunca cambiara y deseó tener más tiempo para escribirlo como un poema. Eliane lo atrapó viéndola, le sacó la lengua y siguió vistiéndose.

Al salir del cuarto encontraron un pasillo largo, de un gris metalizado en techo, piso y paredes. En el centro, una especie de altar con lentes de realidad aumentada. Ninguna pared parecía ser una puerta de salida.

Los lentes eran translucidos, ligeros y cómodos. Con la forma de unas gafas para esquiar rodeaban por completo los ojos, sin dejar ningún espacio. Una voz, que parecía venir de los lentes y hablarles directo a sus cráneos, les dijo: "cuándo estén listos, digan OK".

Ambos dijeron "OK" suavemente y, al instante, el cuarto cobró vida.

Un intenso olor a flores de lavanda llenó el ambiente. Las paredes de metal se derrumbaron, mostrando tras ellas un inmenso campo de lavandas que Juan identificó como la Provence en Francia. Ambos sintieron en sus rostros un cálido viento que agitaba de forma rítmica cada flor.

A lo lejos, el sol del atardecer no sólo alumbraba, calentaba. Lo más increíble era el suelo, que en sus pies ya no se sentía como metal sólido, sino como la tierra suave de una granja.

Juan llevó una mano a su rostro para quitarse los lentes, pero Eliane le dio un golpe en la nuca y lo detuvo.

—¿No te puedes aguantar, verdad? —le dijo protestando.
—¿Qué? —respondió Juan fastidiado.
—Necesitas saber cómo funciona.
—No es eso —mintió Juan.
—¿No conozco a mi Juan? —respondió Eliane, dándole otra palmada en la nuca con cariño.

Sin quitarse los lentes, Juan se agachó y tocó el suelo con sus manos. No se sentía como tierra, porque no podía enterrar sus dedos en ella. Pero, por encima, la superficie realmente parecía la de una roca. Era una sensación extraña. Miró a Eliane y ella aceptó resignada. Ambos, al tiempo, se quitaron los lentes.

Volvieron a ver el mismo pasillo gris metálico, esta vez con algunas diferencias. Vieron agujeros que se abrían en las paredes, de donde parecían venir ráfagas de viento y sonidos artificiales. En algunos de ellos se veían luces cálidas infrarrojas que, Juan supuso, simulaban al sol. Notó que el suelo ahora eran millones de pequeños fragmentos de metal que se reorganizaban para crear un efecto de suelo rocoso.

Juan se puso los lentes de nuevo y, una vez más, se transportó al sur de Francia. En un atardecer imposible porque su mente sabía que era la mañana. Y que Francia ya no existía, reemplazada por un oscuro desierto radiactivo.

"Todos los participantes han terminado la preparación. Es hora de empezar el recorrido por las últimas seis décadas de la humanidad, empezando por enero de dos mil veinte."

El paisaje se desvaneció y todo se puso oscuro. Lentamente la luz volvió y ahora estaban en una inmensa pradera que Juan reconoció de inmediato. Eliane tomó de la mano a Juan con fuerza, porque ella también la reconoció. Pero antes de que ninguno dijera algo, notaron que alrededor de ellos estaban sus compañeros de viaje.

—¡Ahí están! —gritó Riko emocionada—. ¡Qué tal ese inicio tan increíble!

Los tres seguían tomados de la mano, con Riko en el centro. Siu estaba boquiabierto y maravillado con el entorno. Feng, por otro lado, lloraba de alegría.

—¿Así era? —preguntó Feng a nadie en particular—. ¿Así era el mundo?

Juan intentó responder, pero la voz del Museo se adelantó.

“La primera experiencia es una tradicional granja de flores de lavanda del sur de un país llamado Francia, en lo que se conocía como Europa, tres mil kilómetros al norte de la hoy Zona Segura Tres. La lavanda es una flor cuya fragancia se usaba en perfumes y artículos de belleza.”

—Un super sintetizador de olor —dijo Siu al grupo—, debe ser carísimo mantenerlo. ¿Pero cómo hacen el suelo?
—Creo que es una mega textura robotizada con servos —comentó Juan—. Si te quitas los lentes, puedes ver el entrelazado de piezas metálicas que parecen reorganizarse cuando caminamos. Es increíble. Deben ser millones de piezas.

“¡Correcto!", respondió la voz del Museo, sorprendiendo a Juan de que reaccionara al contexto de la conversación. “Una súper estructura entretejida de grafeno movida electromagnéticamente recrea las texturas del Museo. A lo largo del recorrido la verán construir cosas aún mas complejas, esta aventura apenas empieza.“

En el campo de visión de todos, una serie de flechas de luz los animaban a caminar y continuar el recorrido. Juan miró a Dustin que, en silencio, miraba al paisaje, moviendo su cabeza en negación y decepción.

Caminaron varios minutos entre una larga y verde pradera que olía a césped húmedo. En cada paso el paisaje se hacía un poco más árido, un poco más cálido. Eliane notó que la pared del pasillo donde empezaron ya no existía. En su mente trató de imaginar dónde estaba. Por fuera, El Museo era una serie de cinco domos gigantes. Por dentro, no había forma de creer que no estaban en el mundo exterior.

—¿Una playa? —preguntó Dustin, que iba detrás de todos, en un murmullo.

El grupo volteó a ver a sus espaldas y notaron que, tras ellos, ahora se extendía una playa gigante de arena blanca. Al voltear de regreso, y como en un truco de magia, el paisaje había cambiado a selva tropical.

—Playas hay en todas partes —reiteró Dustin, ajustando las mangas de su plateado uniforme del Museo hacia atrás y descubriendo dos tatuajes en sus brazos que Juan identificó de inmediato.

“Así es”, respondió la voz del Museo, “esta es una playa como muchas de las que aún quedan tras Las Bombas. Pero la sorpresa no está en la arena sino bajo el mar.“

El suelo se abrió con un temblor y alrededor de ellos el mar los inundó por todos lados. El grupo se cubrió el rostro de forma instintiva. Juan se arrodilló y sintió sus viejas rodillas tronar y enviarle un choque de dolor. Cien años de vida no llegan sin consecuencias. Perdió el balance y se cayó hacia atrás, pero una fuerza invisible lo detuvo con cuidado.

Juan asumió que el suelo había de nuevo cambiado de forma para crear una especie de silla que lo salvó. Sus lentes escondían la existencia de una estructura, pero con sus manos logró palpar una estructura sólida. También notó que el resto del grupo se sostenía de maneras extrañas y entendió que no era el único que había perdido el balance.

En instantes todos estaban bajo el mar, inexplicablemente húmedos, pero respirando con facilidad. A su alrededor, una espectacular cantidad de peces nadaban en un baile coordinado e hipnotizante.

“En dos mil veinte”, explicaba El Museo, “el mar estaba aún lleno de una masiva diversidad de especies. Lo que ven es un cardumen de arenques del Atlántico. Algunas escuelas de este pez podían alcanzar cinco kilómetros cúbicos. Millones de peces en un sólo lugar.”

Poco a poco cayó la noche en lo profundo del océano Atlántico. Alrededor de los peces, un psicodélico brillo empezó a rodearlos.

"Estos peces se alimentaban de plancton que, en ocasiones, al ser tocado se iluminaba con un azul eléctrico conocido como bioluminiscencia".

La luz del sol los rodeó nuevamente y a lo lejos escucharon un canto extraño y profundo, como el grito de un violín alienígena.

“Uno de los depredadores naturales de estos peces…”, anunció El Museo, mientras una sombra se acercaba a lo lejos, cantando esa canción única e indescriptible. “...era también uno de los animales más grandes del planeta Tierra.”

Una colosal masa gris azulada se acercó. Con una boca gigante atacó la escuela de peces y de un solo bocado se comió a cientos de ellos. Quizás miles. Era como ver una nave espacial de ciencia ficción, orgánica, inmensa, aerodinámica y de una belleza indescriptible. Su paso generó una ola de viento que Juan sintió en su piel y no pudo evitar admirar el diseño del Museo.

"La ballena azul es una de las muchas especies que el Antropoceno y Las Bombas extinguieron. Desde la primera pandemia y antes del Colapso Ecológico ya estaba en peligro. No había forma de que sobreviviera. Hoy guardamos muestras genéticas en El Museo y en otros lugares del mundo esperando que los biorreactores del futuro nos permitan recuperarla."

La ballena nadaba por encima de sus cabezas, flotando cada vez más cerca del grupo.

—Tiene que ser un holograma creado por los lentes —comentó Eliane a Juan.
—Tiene que serlo —respondió él—. El suelo cambia de forma pero no creo que puedan simular algo así y que además flote.

La ballena estaba ahora a menos de un metro de sus cabezas, nadie se animaba a tocarla hasta que Riko levantó sus manos, sintió la piel del animal y no pudo evitar gritar.

—¡Es real!

La ballena cantó ante la caricia de Riko, nadando lentamente para no dejar de estar cerca de ellos. Todos decidieron tocarla y cada uno dejó ir un involuntario suspiro al notar su textura. Se sentía viva.

—No sabía —susurró Dustin con nostalgia—. No sabía.

“La humanidad es una historia de conflicto”, comentó El Museo, “pero también de esperanza. Y en El Museo creemos que no sólo la ballena azul volverá. Todos, todos volverán.”

Las luces parpadearon y, en un instante, la ballena ya no estaba. En su lugar, miles de peces de todo tipo los rodearon. Peces payaso anaranjados, tiburones blancos, delfines, pulpos, barracudas, escalares, manatíes y un sinfín de corales, crustáceos y otros peces. Todos nadando y explotando en vida a su alrededor.

"Esta escena no es una exageración del Museo. En los arrecifes de coral del pasado se congregaba una inmensa y diversa colección de vida tan colorida y densa como la que ven ahora. Hoy en día los desiertos marinos aún conservan muchos de estos corales, aunque sin color."

Riko y Feng lloraban y reían sin control, con sus espaldas descansando sobre el pecho de Siu que los abrazaba a ambos por detrás. Dustin tenía sus brazos sobre su cabeza y no paraba de mirar alrededor.

—Me costó años convencerte de bucear, ¿recuerdas? —preguntó Juan a Eliane.
—¿Y tú olvidas mi tímpano? —le respondió Eliane—, no quería ignorarte, solo me dolía.

Juan se sintió un poco avergonzado por haberlo olvidado y Eliane lo notó. Dio la vuelta y acarició el rostro de Juan con ambas manos. La dura textura de sus manos era maravillosa.

—Valió la pena el dolor —dijo ella—, gracias por llevarme a bucear cuando todo esto existía.

Juan vio los ojos de Eliane tan perfectos como cuando la conoció por primera vez. Tras las arrugas de un siglo de historia, encontró a la misma persona que cambió su vida para siempre. La vergüenza lo abandonó y a cambio llegó un inmenso agradecimiento de que ella estuviera en su vida.

—Igual me costó años.
—No pierdes una.
—Gracias por quitarme la culpa.
—La culpa es para las lagartijas —comentó ella guiñando un ojo.

La experiencia marina se desvaneció y solo quedó un mar tranquilo y vacío con las flechas de luz que los animaban a moverse. Eliane preguntó a Juan por sus rodillas y él le pidió dejar de preguntar lo mismo cada cinco minutos. El grupo terminó en un restaurante tropical con una gran mesa de madera a la sombra de palmeras.

“Hemos completado un tercio del recorrido”, dijo El Museo. “Es hora de un almuerzo ligero de comida de mar”.

—¡SOY VEGETARIANA! —gritó Riko de inmediato.

Siu la golpeó en el hombro para que bajara la voz.

“Por supuesto, todos los platos son de células de pescado provenientes de biorreactores o basados en plantas. Ningún animal fue tocado en el proceso.”

De entre las plantas de la playa, dos robots meseros aparecieron con los platos. A Juan le pareció extraño ver algo tan normal como los bots meseros de cualquier restaurante en un lugar tan tecnológicamente sorprendente. Pero, quizás, si algo funciona no hay por qué cambiarlo.

Ver el rostro de sorpresa en el resto del grupo le recordó que, hoy en día, ir a un restaurante era un privilegio y que para ellos sería un momento inolvidable.

La mesa era compartida entre los seis y Eliane seguía fascinada por la interacción de los tres chicos.

—Entonces, ¿los tres son pareja? —preguntó Eliane al grupo.
— Pod —respondió Siu en automático—. No pareja. Pod. Una pareja implica dos. Como ustedes. Nosotros somos tres.
—Somos seis, realmente —agregó Riko. Siu parecía desaprobar que ella lo dijera, pero Feng asintió.

Dustin dejó atrás su rostro enigmático y estoico para mostrarse extasiado por el sabor de, lo que El Museo aseguró, eran croquetas de pescado. Si la conversación le interesaba, la comida le interesaba más.

—Wow, seis —exclamó Eliane—. ¿Y los seis son... románticos entre sí?
—Es muy normal hoy en día —interrumpió Juan—. En especial después de Las Bombas, las relaciones humanas, casi que por necesidad, cambiaron a…
—¡Hey! — Eliane llamó la atención de Juan, golpeando su frente con un dedo dos veces — ¿Qué tal si dejas que el pod me lo explique?

Juan gruñó. Riko sonrió, tomó un generoso sorbo de una bebida cremosa que El Museo aseguraba que tenía "sabor a limón y textura de coco", miró a su bebida con el agradecimiento de encontrar una piedra preciosa en las montañas, suspiró en aprobación por la frescura del sabor, y continuó.

—Sí, los seis en el pod somos una relación. No todos nos amamos igual, pero todos amamos a por lo menos uno o dos de nosotros. Algunos, como Feng, son muy nuevos porque los acabamos de rescatar. Y no todos eligen quedarse.
—¿Rescatar? —preguntó Eliane.
— Sí. Feng vivía en los túneles de Guangzhou. No ser heterosexual es ilegal en los refugios chinos y casi lo matan. Pero gracias a la fundación lo encontramos y logramos traer a Nueve Okinawa.

Feng acarició su rostro, tocando con orgullo su mentón fracturado, su nariz desviada y su ojo hinchado.

—Gracias a Riko puedo ser quién soy, cómo soy, y feliz.
—¿Qué fundación? —preguntó Juan con auténtica curiosidad.

Riko miró al suelo con timidez. Siu fue quien habló esta vez.

—A Riko no le gusta que la gente sepa.
—Aunque —agregó Riko—, si ellos pagaron el ticket del Museo y son del grupo de prueba, quizás con ellos no importa.

Riko asintió a Siu, quien se encogió de hombros, se llevó un vegetal a la boca y, tras masticarlo, reveló la verdad.

—Ella es Riko Meier-Hayashibara. La tercera y única hija sobreviviente de la fortuna Hayashibara.
—¡Tú eres la hija de Aki! —gritó Juan.
—¿Aki? —preguntó Riko extrañada— Sólo gente cercana le decía “Aki” a mi mamá.

Juan se sintió muy idiota.

—Akio. Quise decir Akio. ¿Tu mamá fundó Haya Heavy Industries, verdad?
—Sí, soy una de las hijas de Thomas Meier y Akio Hayashibara.

“Haya Heavy Industries y la Fundación Hayashibara son en gran parte responsables de la construcción de este museo”, declaró la voz gigante del domo.

Dustin silbó en sorpresa. Eliane sonrió con los ojos cerrados y Juan miró perplejo al horizonte. Otro silencio se adueñó del restaurante tropical en la playa. El simulado viento movía el blanco cabello de Juan.

—Un día —dijo Siu rompiendo el silencio—, quiero tener una barba así de gris y gruesa como la suya.
—Je —rió Juan—, no te preocupes. Sólo come lo que quieras que la vejez igual llegará. Junto con mal aliento.
—Espera —agregó Eliane, dirigiéndose a Riko—, ¿entonces usas el dinero de la fundación para rescatar personas de las áreas irradiadas?
—Sí, o de otras áreas de conflicto. Nos conocimos en la red y creamos el plan. Es muy costoso, pero lo vale —declaró Riko orgullosa.
—Y si son seis, ¿por qué sólo vinieron tres?

Visiblemente incómoda, Riko tomó aire y continuó.

—Realmente es muy costoso sacarlos. Nuestro capital no es muy líquido. Y aunque la fundación de mis padres financió parte del Museo, no teníamos para todos.
—¡Ella lo hizo por mí! —exclamó Feng con un golpe en el pecho— ¡Era mi sueño venir a este lugar!

Juan se acarició la barba mientras miraba fijamente a Riko y su grupo. Eliane ya sabía lo que pasaba por la mente de Juan y dejó que ocurriera.

—¿Cuánto... —empezó Juan— ... cuánto cuesta rescatar a alguien?
—Depende de la zona —explicó Riko—. Siu fue mi primer rescate. Fue amor a primer texto y tenía que sacarlo de Busan antes del Colapso total. Eso fueron…
—Cinco bitcoins —calculó Siu.
—Sí, cinco. Pero Feng fue más difícil. Un submarino rentado en Hong Kong. Un contrabandista que lo sacara de las alcantarillas. Las antenas repetidoras para no perder comunicación. Fueron unos veinte bitcoins.
—¿Veinte? —preguntó Feng perplejo— No tenía idea. Lo siento, lo siento tanto, no debieron…
—No seas tonto —le respondió Riko abrazándolo del cuello y llevando la cabeza de Feng a su pecho— Lo vales, lo vales por completo. Lo haría de nuevo sin pensarlo.

Juan seguía haciendo cálculos.

—La empresa de tu madre inventó el grafeno industrial, ¿no les alcanza el capital?
—Mi mamá la creó pero hoy es más de los inversionistas — se lamentó Riko—. Y ya usé gran parte de mi herencia.
—Y en promedio, ¿cuánto les cuesta rescatar a una persona de áreas de conflicto y llevarla a una zona segura?
—Unos diez bitcoins —dijo Siu.

Juan palpó los bolsillos de su uniforme en busca de su terminal, pero no lograba encontrarla. Maldijo en voz baja mientras seguía buscando. Eliane suspiró y de su bolsillo sacó su terminal.

—Usa la mía.
—Okidoki.

Juan pasó sus dedos por la transparente superficie de la terminal de Eliane, que se encendió con vida mostrando una interfaz gráfica. Tras autenticar sus contraseñas y firmas biométricas, finalmente le dijo a Riko:

—¿Me pasas tu billetera?

Riko, extrañada, buscó su propia terminal. Abrió la dirección de su cripto-billetera y la envió a la terminal de Juan. Ambos hicieron el baile criptográfico estándar de transferir dinero. Con drama teatral, Juan elevó su dedo índice al aire, lo clavó en la pantalla y finalmente declaró:

—Listo. Eso debería ser suficiente para rescatar algunas personas más.

Riko revisó su terminal y, temblando, la dejó sobre la mesa. Siu y Feng se acercaron a ver la pantalla. Una transacción de 750,000 bitcoins brillaba en la interfaz.

—¡Así fue cómo pagaron la entrada al Museo! —gritó Feng emocionado— Claro. Cómo no iban a ser millonarios, si se nota de lejos.
—¿Qué se nota de lejos? —preguntó Eliane con una sonrisa curiosa que derretía a Juan.
—Que son latinos. ¡¡Por supuesto que son millonarios!!

Dustin se enfocó en Juan y Eliane por un instante con una mirada seria. Siguió comiendo sin dejar de verlos y les preguntó:

—¿Eso es verdad? ¿Son latinos?
— Sí —contestó Juan, tratando de decidir si el tono de Dustin era amenazante o solo rudo—, somos ambos de la Zona Segura Uno.
—¿Qué parte de Uno? —preguntó Dustin.

Juan se rascó la barba tratando de entender a Dustin, pero Eliane le puso su mano en la pierna y la apretó.

—Uno Colombia —contestó ella.
—¿Dónde queda Uno Colombia? —preguntó Siu.
—Entre el Pacífico y el Atlántico —dijo Feng, con la emoción de quien está conociendo a una persona famosa.
—Entre el Pacífico —repitió Dustin lentamente— y el Atlántico. No hay ubicación más estratégica en el mundo.
—En el mundo de hoy —dijo Juan, cansado de escuchar el mismo argumento xénofobo—, pero no siempre fue así.

La tensión en el ambiente aumentó y Riko, aún impactada por la millonaria donación, sintió la responsabilidad de romper el hielo que había enfriado la simulada playa.

—¿Tú cómo compraste tu ticket? —le preguntó Riko a Dustin.
—¿No es un poco atrevida esa pregunta? —respondió Dustin desafiante.

“Ahora que ha finalizado la comida”, interrumpió El Museo con perfecta armonía, “queremos darle la bienvenida una vez más al grupo de Riko, Siu y Feng, de la Fundación Hayashibara. Al señor Dustin King, en representación de los Veteranos de la Alianza Latina y al señor y señora…”

—No, no, no —dijo Juan en voz alta, deteniendo al Museo—. Antes de eso, y gracias, Museo, me gustaría preguntarle algo al señor Dustin.

“Por supuesto”, accedió El Museo.

—¿Cómo puedo ayudarte? —preguntó Dustin con un acento cada vez más norteamericano.
—¿Eras un soldado?
— Así es.
—Y tu ticket del Museo, ¿es una cortesía de veterano?
—Así es.
—¿Eres un veterano de la Alianza Latina? ¿Combatiste por defender a mi país en la invasión tras el Colapso y Las Bombas?

Dustin no respondió por un rato, pero nadie dijo nada. Juan sabía que nada era más insoportable que el silencio de una pregunta no respondida. Riko intentó hablar, pero Eliane le hizo un gesto con su mano.

Siu miró a Feng y le hizo señas con sus manos y movimientos de párpado. Feng le respondió igual. Eliane se preguntó si estaban hablando a través de un Link. Ella odiaba los implantes cerebrales, pero sabía que eran muy populares en las áreas de conflicto.

—No, no combatí por la alianza. Mi esposa sí —respondió Dustin al fin—. Cuando ella falleció, yo heredé sus beneficios de veterana. Así obtuve mi ticket.

Juan volvió a mirar los tatuajes en los brazos de Dustin. El "SEMPER FI" en el brazo derecho. La bandera de Estados Unidos en el izquierdo. Una X tachando la bandera.

—"Siempre fiel" —dijo Juan con un susurro apenas perceptible para Dustin—, ¿verdad, Marine?
—Siempre fiel —respondió Dustin—. Aunque se caiga el cielo.
—Y se cayó —dijo Eliane desafiante.

Los tres se miraron con un repentino desprecio. Pero antes de que escalara las luces volvieron a desvanecerse. En la oscuridad, todos sintieron que las sillas cambiaban de forma y los hacían ponerse de pie. Escucharon el sonido de los platos siendo recogidos y, al volver las luces, se encontraron con la pradera y las flechas de luz que los instaban a caminar una vez mas.

“El Museo los invita a recordar. A experimentar la vida de antes. A celebrar la vida. A honrar el pasado. Y a que las memorias nunca mueran. Es hora de continuar el recorrido.”

La espalda de Juan dolía exactamente como dolería la espalda de alguien de su edad. Durante las siguientes horas, el grupo pasó por un bosque de bambú, tocaron un panda, caminaron por castillo medieval, comieron helado en una feria de Siberia con un leopardo de las nieves, sintieron el frío de un glaciar y el calor de un desierto.

Riko cambió su actitud alegre a una timidez inmensa, ocasionalmente sacando la terminal de su bolsillo para revisar incrédula el balance de su cuenta. Siu y Feng mantenían una conversación agitada que fluía entre palabras en voz alta, gestos con las manos y silenciosos parpadeos.

—Disculpa —preguntó Eliane cuando ya no pudo soportar la curiosidad —. ¿Ustedes dos hablan usando Links?
—¿Links? —preguntó Feng.
—Neuralinks —le dijo Siu, tocándole la parte de arriba del cráneo.
—Aaah.

Feng apartó el corto pelo de su cabeza y mostró una herida circular en la base superior del cráneo. Era la inconfundible marca de un implante de Neuralink.

—En los túneles —explicó— no hay muchos empleos. Si quieres dinero, vas a las minas. Y en las minas no se puede hablar. Así que esto es obligatorio para hacer dinero.
—En Busan igual —agregó Siu—, las fábricas son tan ruidosas y el trabajo tan veloz que sin ellos no puedes coordinar.

Eliane consideraba los Links un error de la humanidad. Un sacrilegio inaceptable. Pero su curiosidad era más fuerte que su indignación.

—¿Y escuchan sus pensamientos? —preguntó maravillada a los chicos—, ¿pueden ver lo que el otro piensa o...?
—Naaaghhh —gruñó Riko, volviendo a ser ella misma—, no es nada de eso. Odio que los usen porque me ignoran y ni siquiera es tan interesante.
—¿Entonces?
—Son pulsos —dijo lanzando las manos al aire—, ellos sienten pulsos en la mente, como pings. Se los envían y los reciben. Ping de ida. Pong de regreso. Si lo mezclas con lenguaje de señas y aprendes un código, creas un lenguaje.

Eliane jaló la mano de Juan para que prestara atención, pero Juan consideró que sabía lo suficiente sobre el Linkguaje y cómo se integraba con una especie de código morse entre palabras. Para él era la obvia evolución humana integrar máquina y mente. Su interés estaba más en quién era este personaje llamado Dustin.

—¿Y por qué no te pones un Link? —razonó Eliane con Riko—, suena a que te estás perdiendo de una parte de la relación.
—¡Es verdad! —respondió Siu en aprobación.
—No —dijo Riko con agresividad—. Si Dios quisiera eso, habríamos nacido con uno puesto. Mi cuerpo es sagrado.
—Si eres una niña in-vitro —se burló Feng mientras detallaba un cactus gigante en el simulado desierto del Museo—, nada tuyo es natural. Todo vino de un tubo.
—El 90% de los niños post-Colapso son in-vitro —explicó Juan en tono automático—. Y no es como si pudieras elegir dónde naces.
—O lo que tu familia decide por ti cuando eres joven— agregó Eliane.
—O tu país —dijo Dustin, sorprendiendo a todos.

El escenario cambió del árido desierto a un lugar lleno de personas. Pero ninguna de ellas era real. Todas eran sombras oscuras. Sin rostro. Bailando. A Juan le sorprendió notar que las personas se chocaban con él. Sus cuerpos eran reales. Seguía fascinado por la tecnología que permitía crear superficies táctiles programáticas de tan alto detalle.

En el fondo, entre luces, lásers y mucho ruido, vio una tarima gigante con un DJ tocando música electrónica. En las pantallas, un texto:

"EL MUSEO DE LA PRIMERA PANDEMIA LES DA LA BIENVENIDA AL ÚLTIMO FESTIVAL DE MÚSICA ANTES DE LAS BOMBAS. EN AUSTIN, TEXAS. 2040".

Los tres chicos y Dustin se perdieron en la robótica multitud. Eliane y Juan se tomaron de las manos, sintieron el bajo de la música retumbar en sus cuerpos y, con cuidado y paciencia, empezaron a bailar.

Pero no duró mucho. Los huesos y músculos de cien años, a pesar de la ciencia médica, no pueden bailar demasiado sin causar inmenso dolor. El Museo pareció detectar su cansancio y materializó dos sillas, elevándolos por encima de la multitud. A lo lejos, vieron al DJ mezclar y bailar.

—Es nuestra canción, ¿lo notaste? —le preguntó Juan a Eliane.
—Es tu canción, no la mía.
—Ay por favor, tú amas esta canción.
—Amar, a veces, es fingir.
—¿Fingir qué? —dijo Juan echando sus ojos para atrás en exasperación.
—Fingir por años que me gusta una canción que a ti te encanta.
—¿Por qué?
—Por amor.
—Pero te he visto escucharla.
—Con el tiempo aprendí a amarla también.
—¿Y qué más has fingido?
—Amar a la gente que tú amabas y yo no —respondió Eliane al ritmo del bajo.
—Wow, ¿qué más?
—¿Cuenta haber fingido por años que no me moría de las ganas de verte cada día
—¿Cuándo?
— Antes. Antes de decidir estar juntos.

Juan suspiró asintiendo.

—¿Por qué nos tomó tanto tiempo?
—¿Qué cosa? —preguntó Eliane.
—Estar juntos.
—Por fingir que no era un amor tan grande.
—O que nuestras vidas ya eran lo que queríamos.
—Hey, entonces tú también fingías.
— Todos fingimos, por amor, ¿no es esa tu línea?
— A ver, ¿tú qué has fingido conmigo?
—Que me sorprendo —explicó Juan, tirando las manos al aire— cuando me enseñas algo que ya sé.
—¿En serio? ¿Y es que sabes todo lo que te he enseñado?
—Claro que no. Pero sí mucho.
—¿Y qué más sabes? —preguntó Eliane con tono juguetón.
—Con quién te veías cuando te ibas lejos sola.

Eliane perdió su sonrisa juguetona y el sonido del concierto se apagó en su mente. Juan, al notarlo, la tomó de la mano, la besó lenta y tiernamente en la boca y le acarició el cabello. A pesar de los años, su cabello seguía teniendo ese tono entre negro y caramelo. Juan se preguntó si Eliane se lo pintaba. Nunca lo supo. Quizás también fingía no tener canas.

—No importa, Eli Bi —le dijo con una cálida sonrisa y ojos entre cerrados—. Tú sabes que no importa.
—¿Cómo supiste?
—Recuerda quién era antes. Y mi trabajo. Mi gente mantenía una invasión a raya. ¿No me iban a contar que hacía mi Eli Bi en sus aventuras?

Eliane le apretó la mano y notó que sus encías dolían de morder muy fuerte.

—¿Y elegiste justo este día para confesarme que sabías?
—Eli. No. Importa. Una sabia Eli me dijo que amar, a veces, es fingir.
—Ay, mi Juan, eres un hijo de puta a veces, ¿sabes?
—Yo también te amo.

El concierto siguió y cambió a otra canción. En la multitud escucharon a Feng gritar "esta es un clásico" y notaron que hasta Dustin bailaba al ritmo del bajo. Los tres chicos del pod se movían felices.

—Oh, recuerdo nuestra fase de "pods" y experimentación —comentó Juan con sarcasmo.
—No fue una fase —dijo Eliane cortante.

La canción volvió a cambiar a un remix oscuro y de sonidos industriales.

—Esta sí me gusta —confesó Eliane al aire.
—Yo sé —contestó Juan.

Al concierto le siguió un paseo por New York, una caminata por una fábrica de automóviles de combustión interna y una procesión religiosa de Semana Santa en el centro de Sevilla. Mientras el grupo caminaba entre árboles, contemplando sus brillantes frutas naranjas, Dustin empezó a alejarse de ellos.

Juan, al notarlo, apenas escuchaba al hombre susurrar.

—Yo no sabía, no sabía.

“El inicio del año dos mil veinte es reconocido como la última fecha de equilibrio natural y social del periodo de paz más extenso del Antropoceno”, explicó El Museo de nuevo. “Ahora El Museo los llevará al más reciente de los hechos de violencia masiva antes de las Zonas Seguras: La Invasión Norteamericana de América Latina posterior a Las Bombas. Si la experiencia a continuación resulta muy gráfica, pueden retirarse los lentes.”

El escenario se transformó en una montaña andina con vista a una verde sabana. El grupo tenía una vista desde lo alto de la montaña a una batalla masiva. Aviones bombardeaban segundo tras segundo un inmenso valle de diferentes parches de verde. Grupos de vacas a lo lejos mugían aterrorizadas en medio del campo. Tanques de guerra y sistemas antiaéreos disparaban sin parar. Los soldados peleaban sin tregua.

El escenario avanzaba a alta velocidad cada minuto. La pradera inmensa se transformaba en una tundra oscura y humeante. Un insoportable olor a quemado llenaba el ambiente. Cuerpos sin vida y máquinas destruidas reemplazaron las casas campesinas y animales de granja que antes habitaban esa sabana. La artillería explotaba sin cesar.

“Tras el invierno nuclear provocado por Las Bombas en el antiguo primer mundo, los ejércitos sobrevivientes, hambrientos y desesperados, decidieron unir fuerzas e invadir a las poblaciones cercanas a los trópicos, únicas zonas intactas en el planeta con una agricultura funcional.”

Juan cruzó sus brazos y observó el escenario en silencio. Eliane entrelazó sus manos en el brazo derecho de Juan y se recostó sobre su hombro. Riko y su pod se tomaron de las manos de nuevo. Dustin se arrodilló y, sin dejar de mirar, dejó correr pequeñas lágrimas en su rostro.

“Ningún lugar fue tan favorecido tras Las Bombas o tan afectado por la invasión como Los Andes. El poder residual de las Fuerzas Militares de Estados Unidos y Canadá se enfocó en conquistar y dominar la tierra más fértil del planeta. Hoy lo recordamos como la más sanguinaria guerra no nuclear de la historia reciente.”

El escenario cambió a una casa en las montañas. De arquitectura Andino-Japonesa. Sutil, pero imponente. Paredes de concreto y madera. Grandes vitrales. Jardines internos y una hermosa pradera externa, idéntica a la pradera del inicio del recorrido. A los alrededores de esta casa, una masiva cantidad de baterías antiaéreas, radares y cañones de artillería.

“El Museo rinde homenaje al Libertador Pérez, presidente de la Alianza Latina, quien comandó las fuerzas militares de la Alianza y detuvo hace treinta años la invasión del ejército combinado Norteaméricano. La Fundación Pérez, creada en honor al Libertador, es uno de los socios fundadores del Museo.”

La versión digital de un hombre de setenta años con un uniforme verde oliva, pelo corto y gris, barba mantenida y disciplinada, se materializó en la entrada de la casa. Miraba al horizonte, más allá de la montaña, donde a lo lejos se alzaban las humeantes heridas del combate.

A su alrededor, su familia lo rodeaba: Una mujer más alta que él, de pelo largo y recogido, abrigada con una ruana andina; dos hijas adultas y un niño pequeño. En el cielo, lentamente, una serie de misiles empezaron a opacar el brillo del cielo.

“El ejército combinado de Norteamérica, en la desesperación previa a su derrota, disparó toda su munición de misiles contra el hogar del presidente Pérez.”

Las baterías antiaéreas y cañones abrieron fuego al unísono, destruyendo misil tras misil. Pero eran demasiados. Todos sabían cómo termina la historia, pero aún así cubrieron sus rostros. Decenas de misiles atravesaron la barrera y destruyeron por completo la casa.

El grupo, en el centro de la simulada explosión digital, vió a la familia volar en átomos y a la casa desaparecer en una nube negra.

“El presidente Pérez, a quién hoy recordamos como Libertador, murió junto a su familia. Su muerte lo consolidó como mártir e inspiró a una generación entera a expulsar la invasión, construir las Zonas Seguras alrededor del ecuador del planeta y crear las ciudades que hoy sostienen la reconstrucción y terraformación del mundo. En su honor y el de muchos otros existe este museo.”

Las cenizas, aún al rojo vivo, del cráter de lo que era la casa los rodeaban. Entre ellas, las sombras de espaldas de la familia se materializaron. El grupo rompió el silencio cuando Riko por fin habló.

—Toda su familia, no es justo.
—No es justo —dijo Eliane suavemente.
—Dos hijas —mencionó Siu contemplando las sombras.
—Y un niño —completó Dustin, avergonzado.

Juan, que no se había movido, caminó hacia Dustin. Lo vio arrodillado y, con esfuerzo, se sentó a su nivel. El Museo, una vez más, materializó un soporte para su espalda. Y, una vez estuvieron cara a cara, le dijo:

—No era un niño, eran dos. Los niños eran gemelos. Nacieron cuando la invasión empezó. Tenían tres años. Nunca se hizo público que eran gemelos porque la guerra era más importante. Y nunca fueron fotografiados juntos.

Dustin vio a Juan y, comprendiendo la familiaridad de su rostro, soltó en un llanto incontrolable que resultaba inevitablemente extraño en un hombre adulto como él.

—Gemelos —repitió Dustin entre el llanto.
—Y murieron, junto a las niñas, ese día —agregó Juan.

Eliane se acercó a Juan y a Dustin y, sin dejar de estar de pie, recordó sus nombres:

—Joan. Julia. Tommy. Gus.

Juan contempló los negros ojos de Dustin, ahora enrojecidos de lágrimas. Notó su oscura piel, las constantes cicatrices en su rostro, la experiencia y el dolor. Y esperó hasta que Dustin, finalmente, le habló.

—Yo no sabía. Estábamos desesperados. Y ustedes eran tan ricos. Tan privilegiados. Perdimos todo con Las Bombas. Todo. Yo creí hacer lo correcto por mi país. Seguí órdenes.
—Eras un marine de Estados Unidos —le respondió Eliane.
—Y estuviste ahí, acá —siguió Juan.
—Lo siento, lo siento, lo siento. Cuando se acabó. Cuando nos rendimos... fui prisionero de guerra. Mi guardia era Lorenza, policía militar.

Dustin destapó su uniforme del Museo y enseñó, en su pecho, un tatuaje pequeño con el nombre "Lorenza" en una tipografía de máquina de escribir del pasado.

—Se enamoraron —concluyó Eliane.
—Y ella me explicó, me hizo ver. Y quise reconstruir mi vida. Pero perdimos un hijo y la guerra la afectó, ella se enfermó y...

Dustin lloró con aún más fuerza.

—Y murió —continuó Juan.
—Lo perdí todo —dijo Dustin, cansado de llorar.
—Sé lo que se siente —terminó Eliane.

Dustin no sabía qué más decir. Eliane se acercó por detrás a Juan y le apretó el hombro. Él la miró y ella le asintió. Juan entendió, miró al cielo, suspiró y le dio un ligero puño en el hombro a Dustin. Esto lo alertó y lo hizo verlo de frente.

Juan inhaló y, con un tono claro, corto y contundente, le dijo a Dustin:

—Te perdono.

Dustin no dijo nada más. Solo apretó la mandíbula, le dio la mano a Juan y, moviendo la cabeza de lado a lado, empezó a rezar una oración mientras tocaba el tatuaje de Lorenza en su pecho.

—Empiezo a sentir mucho sueño — le confesó Eliane a Juan.
—Yo también —le mintió él a ella.
—¿Crees que sean las pastillas?
—Tienen que serlo.
—¿Vamos a tener tiempo?
—Va a ser perfecto.

El Museo les ofreció una cena maravillosa en la simulación de un restaurante en Emilia-Romagna, un pueblo que solía existir en un país conocido como Italia. Después, un concierto de música clásica China en la Beijing del 2030 y una amalgama de piezas de obras de teatro en la Londres del 2040, justo antes del Colapso.

Riko se había animado a preguntarle a Dustin sobre su vida y se maravilló de conocer a alguien con tanto conocimiento de la vieja cultura de Estados Unidos. No paraba de anotar nombres de películas. Siu y Feng teorizaban acerca de cómo El Museo construía la comida y juraban que tenía que ser real, porque ningún biorreactor es tan bueno.

El Museo interrumpió el debate para ofrecerles una última elección:

“Es hora del gran final. Cada grupo se separará y tendrán un domo privado con la simulación que elijan.”

El entorno se oscureció y en el suelo aparecieron tres caminos de luz roja.

“Grupo Meier-Hayashibara, ¿qué experiencia les gustaría repetir para concluir?”.

— ¡El mar! —gritó Riko de inmediato. Siu y Feng lo aceptaron felices.

“Simulación marina atlántica aceptada. Tendrá algunas mejoras especiales por tratarse de la última simulación. Recuerden que tienen dos horas más, luego, sigan las flechas de luz de regreso al barco."

—Es el mejor día de mi vida — dijo Feng.
—Y el mío —respondieron al unísono Riko y Siu.
—Mis papás tenían razón al haber invertido en esto —agregó Riko—, espero verlos en el barco pronto.

Y, despidiéndose del grupo, el pod desapareció en el primer camino rojo.

“¿Grupo Dustin King?”

—¿Puede ser cualquier cosa?

“Mientras haya sido digitalizada en redes sociales del pasado y existan suficientes videos e imágenes, el motor neuronal del Museo hará su mejor esfuerzo por replicar el momento de la historia que nos indique.”

—Hay un hostal en la playa, en una región de la costa atlántica de Colombia. En medio de un parque natural llamado Tayrona. En el año 2060, hace veintiséis años. Tenía paneles solares a los lados. Varias chozas gigantes. Y el fuselaje de un F-35 oxidado por el agua de mar estaba en el centro de la pista de baile.

El Museo puso en frente de Dustin doce opciones fotográficas que coincidían. Dustin tocó una de ellas y dijo:

—Esta es. Acá Lorenza me propuso matrimonio. Acá fue. Gracias.

“La simulación está lista. Estamos buscando música de la época en nuestros archivos. La base de datos de olores no está completa para esta zona, pero El Museo hará lo posible por simular algo equivalente basado en evidencia gráfica.”

Dustin se acercó a Juan y a Eliane, los tomó de los hombros y sonrió.

—Gracias.

Y se alejó en la oscuridad.

“¿Grupo Perez?”

—La casa —dijo Juan sin dudarlo.
—La casa, por supuesto —repitió Eliane—. En tanto detalle como sea posible.

Ninguno de los dos tuvo que caminar. Alrededor de ellos, a alta velocidad, se materializó la casa en la montaña. Rodeada de la pradera, con una vista espectacular a la sabana. El sonido de miles de vacas en el fondo. Los retazos de diferentes tonos de verde de los hatos lecheros. La arquitectura Andino-Japonesa. Las paredes de concreto y madera de tonos cremosos. Los vitrales gigantes.

Juan la contempló sin moverse. Fue Eliane quien lo tomó de la mano y caminó hacia adentro. La puerta se abrió sin que la tocaran y Juan asumió que la tecnología del Museo no podía replicar una puerta física. En la entrada encontraron una guitarra eléctrica que ninguno aprendió a tocar y la batería de rock que ambos sabían tocar a la perfección.

Eliane no lo pudo soportar y golpeó uno de los platillos, que respondió con un satisfactorio y agudo sonido.

Ambos, sorprendidos, se quitaron los lentes un minuto.

Las paredes de la casa, el escenario de la sabana y el verde de la montaña desaparecieron. Pero la batería no. Y la guitarra tampoco. Eran tan reales como ellos.

“Para nuestros fundadores, por supuesto, una experiencia especial”, explicó El Museo.

Se ajustaron los lentes y caminaron por la casa. Tocaron las sábanas del cuarto de los gemelos. El frailejón de peluche por el que Tommy y Gus se peleaban. El cuarto de Julia, lleno de computadoras viejas. El cuarto de Joan, lleno de rifles, escopetas, mapas tácticos y libros de cocina.

El cuarto de los dos, lleno de fotos del pasado. Los viajes a Asia. El yate en el mediterráneo. La moto con la que cruzaron Mongolia. El apartamento en New York que tanto dolor causó. La estúpida patineta en la pared. Cada mascota que tuvieron. El primer libro de ella. El primer libro de él. El libro que escribieron juntos. El hueco de quince años separados.

El primer bebé, el segundo. El piso en Madrid. La casa en México. La casa en Los Ángeles. La casa en Bogotá. La guerra. La guerra. La guerra.

—Creo que necesito sentarme —le dijo suavemente Eliane a Juan.
—¿Te acuerdas del bosque privado? —preguntó Juan.
—Son veinte arbolitos y un pedacito de césped —se burló Eliane.
—Es mi bosque privado y no me voy a disculpar por verlo así.
—Ni deberías —le dijo Eliane tocándole la nariz—, ¿vamos?
—Vamos.

Con un inmenso cansancio y dificultad, caminaron juntos a la parte de atrás de la casa. Pasaron por la puerta secreta al búnker donde, el día del bombardeo, estaban sin sus hijos. Una casualidad cruel del destino que la historia había olvidado. Juan tocó el ladrillo que abría el búnker pero nada pasó. El búnker seguía siendo secreto para el Museo y, por ende, para el mundo.

En la puerta trasera, la manta de picnic que Juan recordaba siempre estar ahí, estaba ahí. No le sorprendió para nada que, al tomarla, no era simulada sino real.

Pero no era su manta porque no olía a una combinación de perro y gato. Ni estaba llena de pelos de animales. Era nueva y perfecta. Se preguntó qué sistema autónomo buscó en subastas online la manta exacta y si la inteligencia artificial del Museo era consciente de sí misma.

Eliane se apoyó del brazo de Juan y lentamente caminaron a la misma pradera en la que la aventura del día había iniciado. Juan extendió la manta en el suelo y ambos se sentaron.

Eliane tocó las puntas del césped con sus dedos y se sorprendió de lo real que se sentía. El sol se ponía al fondo en las montañas de la sabana pintando el cielo de un intenso rojo, naranja, azul y púrpura. Arriba, la luna se veía clara y perfecta. Juan se preguntó cuándo fue la última vez que vio un cielo limpio y decidió aceptar y agradecer esta versión digital.

—Siempre fuiste un dolor en mis bolas —le dijo entre risas Eliane a Juan.
—¿En cuáles bolas si no tienes? —le contestó Juan desafiante y sonriente.
—En las tuyas, que igual son mías.
—Pues tú fuiste un dolor en las mías.

Eliane empezó a respirar cada vez más lento y pesado.

—Quisiera que estuviéramos todos juntos otra vez. No en simulación. De verdad.
—Lo mismo yo, cada día.

De entre los arbustos, una gata negra, otra gata de color dorado verdoso, un perro pequeño y gordo y otro grande y color chocolate se acercaron lentamente. Los rodearon y se acostaron a los pies de ambos, tranquilos.

—Estúpida inteligencia artificial —murmuró Juan.

El sol seguía poniéndose en el horizonte, con un rojo cada vez más fuerte y violento.

—¿Te estás durmiendo también? —preguntó Eliane.
—Sí —mintió Juan—, voy contigo.
—Bien.

La brisa era cálida, lo cual era una mentira porque Juan recordaba que al atardecer el viento de la montaña era frío e indolente. Pero Juan aceptó los cambios y le agradeció al Museo.

—Toda una vida adicto a ti.
—¿A mi? —preguntó Eliane.
—A ti.
—¿Adicto a qué?
—A verte en la mañana. A pelear en la tarde. A abrazarte en la noche.
—A tu café de mierda —se burló Eliane.
—¡Siempre amaste mi café!
—Amar a veces es fingir, Juan.
—Dolor en mis bolas.
—A tus historias.
—Y a las tuyas.
—A tu amor por las niñas.
—A tu fascinación con los gemelos.
—A tu horrible forma de cantar.
—Y a tu hermosa forma de cantar.

Eliane levantó su mirada y, débilmente, lo miró una última vez.

—Esta pastilla me está haciendo efecto más rápido a mi.
—No importa —mintió Juan de nuevo, queriendo alargar el momento para siempre.
—No es justo contigo. No quiero que estés solo.
—No lo estaré. Solo voy un poco tarde, pero llegaré.

En la terminal de Juan empezó a sonar una alarma automática. Su pulso cardiaco estaba empezando a fallar. No pudo evitar sentirse fascinado por la tranquilidad que eso le causaba. Sintió un cansancio insoportable, acarició el pelo de Eliane y le dijo:

—Cero arrepentimientos.
—Cero —respondió ella con un gran esfuerzo.
—Te veo al final —le dijo como despedida.
—Al final del tiempo —declaró ella sonriendo.

Y un rato después, repitió de nuevo:

—Tiempo.

Pero Eliane no dijo nada más.

Juan tomó la mano de Eliane en la suya y poco a poco sintió el frío llegar. El brillo del sol se había ido con ella. El calor también. El cielo digital se tornó nublado y no se veía una sola estrella en él. Solo una mancha de la luna a través de las nubes. Se abrazó a ella y entendió que la vida lo abandonaba.

La pastilla, afortunadamente, funcionaba.

Y no sintió miedo. Porque sólo iba a dejar de experimentar el paso del tiempo. Cien años eran suficientes. Ahora, en un parpadeo, iba a ir al final del tiempo. Y ahí estarían todos. Ahí iba a estar ella también.

On the last day of my 35th year, I went to my first music festival: Estereo Picnic. In the same year, I learned to love better and to value being myself.

We are not just one life, but many lives, yet I can't help but feel this is the end of a chapter.

I never learned to dance salsa like the rest of my family, an obligation for every Colombian. That made me enjoy music less and inhibited the happiness of moving to whatever rhythm I pleased.

This year, that changed. The wonderful people in my life at 35 awakened in me a love for music, dance, and the fantastic power of a playlist shared with people you care about.

Martin Garrix and Fatboy Slim, at Estereo Picnic, fulfilled my dream: Dancing as if the rest of the world wasn't there.

In my 35th year:

• I lived in Dallas, Texas for a while

• I vaccinated my family

• I traveled again after the pandemic

• We raised Platzi’s Series B

• I climbed mountains

• I jumped from a plane

• I flew again and landed for the first time

• Visited Iceland

• Chased a cow

• We sponsored a European League team

• Changed my face

• I strengthened the most important relationships in my life

• I created new incredible lifelong relationships

• I learned to love more and to love myself better

Love and friendship in adulthood become more complex and exclusive. Although you lose connections, the people who remain in your life become closer and more special. If you do it right, they're relationships where everyone gives their best for the other.

In that sense, my 35th year was very fortunate.

C. Tangana, Jungle, the entertaining disaster of The Strokes, Two Feet, Nina Kraviz, and DJ Harvey gave me a Estereo Picnic to cure my worries and feed my soul.

But nothing, nothing compares to entering the mosh pit of Turnstile.

I had never entered the mosh pit of a hardcore band. That's why I plunged in without doubt until I reached the front of the Turnstile concert and realized that, suddenly, my life was in danger.

In the center of a mosh pit there is no anxiety, no insecurities, no worries. You have no time to take photos, record videos, worry about Monday or the Q metrics. There's only rage, fury, energy, violence, and strength. There's raw emotion to the rhythm of the drums, the guitars, and the masterful direction of the vocalist.

Fists fly, bodies jump, and the air smells of sweat. You see a drug transaction happening amid the violence of the dance. You see two people planning a theft. You see hundreds of men and some women jumping and hitting each other relentlessly. And you are part of it. The bass drum resonates in your bones.

Suddenly you understand: Nobody wants to die in the mosh pit. Everyone is jumping in self-defense. Nobody attacks. And that's the key. If you are a little more aggressive and a little more offensive, no one will harm you. Like life itself, the safest place is not behind or in the middle. It's forward, in the front row.

In Turnstile I reconnected with my primal instinct and my ability to survive and thrive. It reminded me that confidence in myself doesn't come from believing, but from trying difficult things and finishing what I start.

The last chapter of my 35th and the first of my 36th reminded me that nothing is more valuable than living life with strength. No excuses. Doing difficult things and choosing the less traveled path. Choosing danger over comfort. Because I am a human being and if someone else could, I certainly can.

This year, after a historic pandemic, I had the fortune of having people around me whom I can't stop thanking for letting me be who I am.

I want to thank you for letting me see myself.
I want to thank you for letting me be myself.

Maximum effort for these coming 36 years.

Oh, and J Balvin's concert sucked.

Do you remember what you ate yesterday? A month ago? A year ago? Do you remember your first kiss? Surely yes. Do you remember your last kiss? Maybe. Do you remember every kiss? No.

One day, just like me, you will die. And that's okay. You didn't exist for millions of years, so everything will be fine after you stop existing for trillions of years.

In your final moments, the only valuable things in your mind will be your recollections. Your memories.

But we can't take many with us at the end.

It's like a travel suitcase. The small one. It only fits six days of clothes. That's it. You have to choose which memories to pack, because at the end of the journey, you won't arrive with everything.

You'll forget the clothes you're wearing today. And this post. And most of your coworkers. Friends and loves.

How do you choose what to pack in the suitcase? By creating memories.

How do you create memories? By taking risks.

Stealing that kiss. Launching that idea. Writing that article. Showing vulnerability. Leaving our comfort zone. Growing. Trying different things. Rejecting routine and normality. Being nonconformist. Creating. Testing.

Fear is an invitation. And every game we play is optional.

What about real risk? What if the pain hurts?

Pain teaches us to take care of ourselves. Scars remind us what not to do and their consequences. This is how we avoid slipping and falling. We learn.

But time passes, scars heal and become memories.

When I grow old, I want to be full of scars like tattoos. Evidence of what I lived. I had fun. Or maybe not. But I experienced.

What a waste to reach the end with a flawless human body, intact, sacred, and full of regret. As long as you don't hurt anyone, it's better to arrive with scars. And stories.

The best male marathon runner in the world is 37. The best female marathon runner in the world is 49. The best writers in the world write their first hit after 60. The life expectancy of cats has doubled in the last decade.

CATS.

We are not old. We aren't getting old. Our decisions, seemingly permanent, aren't. We are not one life. We are many lives.

If at 35 I can learn the value of reggaeton, anything is possible.

This is the era of mRNA and CRISPR. It's the era of pods and finstas. It's the end of patriotism. It's the beginning of belonging to the tribe we choose. Not the one we're assigned.

Things are coming. The cure for knee pain is coming. More wonderful music is coming. Stories we can't even imagine are coming. Incredible people are coming into our lives. And horrible people we will overcome.

New landscapes and cities will come. Money and bankruptcy and expensive ramen and cheap ramen. New homes, new roofs, new smells.

Journeys to the cosmos, to the mind, and to the heart.

At 40. At 50. At 90. At 120.

We are not old. We aren't getting old. We are not one life. We are many lives.

And we will never be bored.

Just like you, I didn't really fit anywhere when I was a kid.
I still don’t, so I've built my own place.

Modern psychology has evolved to understand a bit better how different we all are. We now test for things like the autism spectrum or ADHD. We’re getting to the true nature of depression and its connection to intelligence. We’re far still, but getting better.

A month after starting school, I was declared a “genius” by my teacher. So, at 6 years old, they moved me from first to second grade. I was so sure I was in trouble when they called my mom. Relieved, I went the next day to my new class.

All my friends were gone and my new peers were older and knew each other for a whole year already. They didn't like me at all. From that moment to the day I graduated high school I was always shorter, younger and weirder than everybody.

When you tell a kid that he's a genius, that kid will believe you and use that “fact” to form a sense of self. And he will understand "I am not like everybody else".

I didn't do homework and I was always in trouble with my teachers. I almost failed 10th grade because I was going to a night school after class to study programming with adults. After leaving high school I took some months to do my first startup (in Visual Basic, didn't work). I started college in the middle of the year, out of sync with the world once again.

This is going to leave scars in your soul

I hated being different as a kid. I love it now. It made me see the world from very different angles. I hate thinking of living a life on rails. A life pre-planned. I love chaos. I love the pain that makes you grow.

Love is super hard when you're this way. Friendships are hard. Relationships of all kinds are a struggle. Turns out, people don't really like it when they see someone behaving out of the norm. Sometimes they won't talk to you. Sometimes they will harass you. Mostly, they will actively ignore you. You will be an outcast, a misfit, a problem.

I've always loved being a problem. But, as an adult, I definitely don't love the loneliness of it.

Yes, I write this today as “Freddy, Platzi’s CEO”. Since Platzi has millions of happy students every day, it’s tempting to believe that in hindsight success was inevitable. But I’m very aware of the dark cliffs my life could have taken. And still can.

Being a misfit, curiously, is pretty common

Turns out 30% to 40% of us are truly neurodiverse and different. But we're all different in VERY different ways, so we don't naturally meet.

That’s why, when people like us click, that's a beautiful miracle. A spark of ideas, creativity, friendship and love. That's what creates startups, books, art, change.

For some of us, sadly, the default reaction to new people is to fall back into deep, deep introversion. To protect ourselves. As it happened to me for a very very long time.

Are you there, too? I bet you are. Here's what worked for me:

• Take risks. Life is safer than you think.

• People don't care about you, they only care about them.

• First impressions don't matter. A good ending erases a bad beginning.

• If someone takes a chance on you, listen.

• When you find someone like you, CHERISH that person.

• Work with people that give a shit. Cynicism is the shield of the average.

• This is easier at startups. Work at startups.

• If you definitely don't find your place, build it.

This place can be a company, a community, a group, a forum, whatever. The internet was made by people like us. The world is controlled by people like us. We are not that special. We are capable of horrible things and wonderful things. We are good and we are bad. We are heroes and criminals.

The only thing that separates us is how extreme we are when we go out in the world. I know it's scary and lonely and sad and terrifying. Just know, it can be worth it.

There is a place for you and by connecting to other people, you can find it.
The world is a wonderful, big, non-boring place. You will find your people.
And if you don’t, you can build that place. I did.

Miracles are statistics. Given enough time, perseverance, smart work and strong principles, dreams do come true. Not because of a special energy of the universe conspiring to make you happy, but simply because of big numbers.

The perfect job. The perfect person. The perfect moment. The perfect opportunity that you just may not be ready to take.

Miracles exist because if there's a 1% chance you'll get what you want, you just need 100 tries for that 1% to be the closest to 100%.

But you may be in the wrong moment of your life to make the most out of it. You have no control over it. You get sad about it. You let go of that ideal version in your mind. You learn to enjoy whatever you can do with that chance.

You learn to be grateful.

There's an undeniable melancholy in you at these moments. A bittersweetness of what could have been. Your imagination fills you with awe of a potential future you won't get to see for now. You learn to like the taste of it. That's what life's made of.

You remember to remain grateful.

Because, as long as you're alive, there will be more chances. Statistically speaking, for as long as you try, you'll get more opportunities, more options, more paths and choices.

In the meantime, you don't wait, you don't hold on and you don't diminish your drive and motivation. You work, you rage, you live. You do your best to be the best of you that you can be.

Miracles are always running late. And sure, waiting will eventually pay off. But why get bored when you can be delighted? Why wait for something else to build your dream when you can build your own?

Rage, and build, and live. That only makes the miracle more worth it.
